Windows Update

  • I have recently done a clean reinstallation of Windows XP. When visiting Windows Update it recommended that I download and install Windows XP Service Pack 3. Does SP3 include all previous updates to Windows XP or do these need to be downloaded separately?

This is a very good question which I am frequently asked. Looking at the Microsoft Downloads website, it states that “Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system”. However, you do need at least Windows XP SP1 installed on your computer before updating to Windows XP SP3. However, Windows Update would have alerted you to the need to install SP1 if required. Since you have just been advised to install SP3 you can safely assume that your computer meets this prerequisite. Please note that after you install Windows XP SP3 you should run Windows Update again, as there have been updates released subsequent to SP3 which you will also need to install. My rule of thumb is that I run Windows Update, install the required updates, then run Windows Update again and repeat the process for any additional updates. Keep repeating this process until you open Windows Update and there are no more updates to be installed.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
