My computer is running Windows NT4 (SP6) which was installed when the computer was assembled in early 2000. The computer has a hard disk capacity of 13 GB which has been partitioned into two drives, the C:\ drive for the system drives and function files and the D:\ drive that hosts all personal files. I have attempted to install a D-Link USB 2.0 USB adapter card (DUB-A2) but when installing the drivers a message appears saying “This package does not contain the driver for this OS”. The package advises that the contents are suitable for Windows XP, 2000, ME and 98SE. In your estimation, how close is the NT4 (SP6) OS to being a suitable host for this USB driver software? Second, I would like to upgrade the computer from Windows NT4 to Windows XP Home Edition SP2. Is it possible to further partition the hard drive and then install Windows XP on a different partition and transfer the files between systems? (more…)

  • Vista’s lack of an up button

    Tip of the Week

Users of Windows Vista may notice that something is missing from the toolbar in Windows Explorer – the up button, which in previous versions of Windows would take you to the previous level in the path (i.e. the parent folder). While you can jump to the parent folder by clicking its name in the address bar, I prefer the quick method of just being able to click a button. While this button is not present in Vista, you can mimic the Up function by pressing the ALT-Up Arrow key combination.

I recently purchased a program called ErrorSmart and installed this along with Spybot Search & Destroy and NoAdware on my computer. When I ran a scan with Spybot it detected both ErrorSmart and NoAdware as malware – both are products which I purchased! I checked on Google and some sites recommend this software and others warn that it contains malware. Can you advise me about whether I have been scammed? (more…)

Each time I run an antivirus scan I notice that the total number of files increases. I always make sure that I clear the Internet Explorer cache before starting the scan. Additionally, I have not added any additional Word files in the interim. Can you explain why this file count increases? (more…)
