Restoring the Disk Defragmenter Shortcut

  • The Disk Defragmenter utility has mysteriously disappeared from Windows. I usually found this utility by going to the “Start” menu > “All Programs” > “Accessories” > “System Tools” but the shortcut no longer appears. Can this shortcut be restored or can the Defragmenter be accessed through a different method?

It seems that you have accidentally deleted the shortcut to the Disk Defragmenter utility from the “System Tools” program group. Fortunately this problem is quite easy to resolve as we only need to re-create the shortcut to the Disk Defragmenter program. Open the “Start” menu > “All Programs” > “Accessories” then right-click on “System Tools” and select “Open”. To create a new shortcut to Disk Defragmenter, right-click in any white space within the window and select “New” > “Shortcut”. The “Create Shortcut” window will appear. In the “Type the location of the item” window enter the following path: “%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc” (without the quotes) and click the “Next” button. In the next screen for the name of the shortcut enter “Disk Defragmenter” and click the “Finish” button. You will now have a new shortcut to Disk Defragmenter in the “System Tools” program group.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
