Websites Not Displaying Correctly in Safari

  • When accessing some websites on my MacBook Pro using Safari it seems that the menu system on the sites do not work correctly. As an example, when selecting menus from the left-hand side of the site of my cricket club in the ACT I attempt to select these side menus, which subsequently offer up sub-menus, I cannot move the mouse pointer to the sub-menu without the original menu shutting or disappearing. The website works perfectly fine from other Windows-based computers which I have used. Do you have a solution for this problem?

The problem you are encountering relates more to cross-browser compatibility of websites, rather than the fact you are attempting to view the website on a Mac rather than a Windows-based PC. Because the vast majority of computers in the world are running Microsoft Windows as the operating system, some web developers only target the website for PC-based browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox. As such, they do not test whether the website works correctly on browsers found on other platforms, such as Safari (Mac), Konqueror (Linux), etc. Therefore, the web designers check that the website works correctly on the web browsers which they are using for testing, but it may not necessarily work on other web browsers. The reason is because each web browser uses a different rendering/layout engine for the web page. Internet Explorer uses the Microsoft proprietary Trident rendering engine, whereas Firefox uses the Gecko open-source engine and Safari uses the WebKit engine. Therefore, the way in which the browser renders the page will depend on the rendering/layout engine used within the browser.

Returning to your question, it seems that the website you are attempting to visit has not been tested with Safari and is not displaying correctly, particularly with regard to the menu system (which is always a bit fiddly to get working across different browsers). However, there is a potential solution to this problem. I would recommend that you try to use Firefox to view the webpage. Firefox is available for most platforms, including Mac and the Mac implementation of Firefox uses the same rendering/layout engine as the Windows version. So, if the webpage was tested and worked through Windows-based Firefox, then it should also work fine through Mac-based Firefox. You can download Firefox from the Mozilla website at www.mozilla.com/firefox .

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
