Creating a Web Page
-
My ISP provides web space on their server for customers to host personal websites. I would like to use this space to display some historical family images so that other family members can access these photos. However, all the files can only be stored in the root of the web space and cannot be in separate folders. I have tried numerous freeware web creators but they all store the images in separate folders. Do you know of any freeware utilities that can create a webpage and store all associated files in the one root directory? The computer is running Windows XP.
The fact that your ISP does not allow sub-directories within the personal web space of members is very strange, as I cannot think of any good reason why this would be disallowed. Additionally, I checked the website of your ISP, particularly the information on personal web space and there is no mention of this restriction. The only restrictions they discuss is the storage limit (of 10 megabytes) and that scripts cannot be used. Therefore, it would be worthwhile querying your ISP as to whether there is actually such a restriction. In any case, I do not know of any web creators which meet this requirement, as it is generally considered bad practice to store everything in the one directory (as you will run into scalability issues in the future should you wish to expand or make the website larger).
If you do wish to create a single page web site which only displays images then the easiest method would be to code the page yourself. This may sound difficult but is not that hard, and will likely be easier and quicker than finding a utility. I would suggest that you look at your ISPs website for information on creating home pages, as this contains most of the information which you will need.
That said, if your ISP does only allow you to create files in the root of your web space and not have sub-directories, then I would perhaps recommend that you investigate alternative web hosting solutions. This would allow you to maintain a much more organised web space which will likely become quite cluttered and confusing when you start adding more images to the site. This also will allow you to use programs to maintain the website rather than having to do this by hand. There are some very inexpensive web hosts and your ISP may even offer an upgraded package, allowing sub-directories to be created, for a nominal fee.
