Move Table Rows in Microsoft Word
By skid on December 20, 2010 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
When working with tables in Microsoft Word a common, yet difficult to achieve task is moving around rows. Many users resort to cutting and pasting rows, which can be quite a cumbersome and long-winded process. Fortunately there is a much easier way to move rows. Click within the row that you wish to move and then hold down the SHIFT-ALT keys and use the up and down arrows to move the row up or down in the table. Selecting multiple rows and following the same procedure will also allow you to move several rows at a time.

Security Centre Malware
By skid on December 20, 2010 in Security and malware | No Comments
When attempting to download the VEOH web player (to watch videos online) a piece of security software called “Security Centre” installed very quickly before I could do anything else. The Security Centre application closed all running programs and commenced scanning the system, eventually showing a number of files which were (supposedly) infected with a virus. In order to remove the infections the software insisted that I must pay for the full version. Even more frustrating is that now whenever the computer starts the opening screen is the Security Centre page trying to connect to the internet for purchasing the software. I cannot stop this from happening using CTRL-ALT-DEL and cannot install the software through the Add/Remove Programs control panel as it is not listed. It also seems to be preventing me from running programs such as Microsoft Office, claiming that the relevant program file is infected. After spending a lot of time with this problem I found no alternative but to purchase the software, subscribing to the software for a two year licence at $50.00. However, to my frustration $70.00 was deducted from my credit card for the “lifetime” subscription! In any case, it now seems to have cleaned the supposedly infected files although the program is still present on the computer (I can see the icon in the system tray, next to the clock in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen). The Windows Firewall also appears to be disabled, although I cannot say whether this was caused by the Security Centre software or was disabled beforehand. How can I get rid of this software once and for all while also preventing this from happening again in the future? The computer is running Windows Vista. (more…)

iPhone Battery Percentage

If you own an iPhone it is possible to display the battery percentage next to the battery indicator in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Go to the Settings > General > Usage and turn “Battery Percentage” to On. You will now see the battery percentage appear next to the battery indicator at the top of the screen.

System Slow Down
By skid on December 13, 2010 in Windows XP | No Comments
My computer has been slowing down over the past few years. The specifications are still relatively recent, so I am unsure why this is happening – Intel Core 2 2.13GHz with 2 GB RAM running Window XP Professional Service Pack 3. It has been suggested to me by a friend with IT experience that Windows XP becomes clogged-up after a period of time (I think this version has been on-machine for about three years, maybe more) and that the only solution is to do a clean reinstall. That seems a logical approach but of course one has then to reinstall everything. Would the same declogging effect be achieved by doing a repair reinstall? Alternatively, if a clean reinstall is really needed would I be better moving to Windows 7, as I understand that Windows 7 Professional has a Windows XP emulator so I could still use my existing programs? Incremental Backups
By skid on December 13, 2010 in System maintainance | No Comments
Can you recommend the best method to backup the My Documents folder on my computer in increments? I have both a USB key and USB external hard drive with copies of the My Documents folder which I manually make every week. Is there any software available which can backup any file that has been changed within a given period of time and does not touch anything else, as this would be both more time efficient and space efficient on the external storage devices. The computer is running Windows XP although I would also like to backup my Windows 7 laptop using the same method. (more…)
