Update Drivers Automatically

  • Can you recommend a free program that scans and updates all drivers on a system. Searching Google returns many utilities which perform this function, with varying degrees of success, but they all require payment to download and update the drivers.

There are many programs which claim to perform this function, but in reality it is very difficult to reliably achieve. The reason is that there are thousands upon thousands of different hardware vendors and hardware devices. If a program was able to update all drivers on your system it would need to have a database of all hardware devices and all hardware manufacturers, so it could automatically check for updated drivers. Additionally, not all hardware manufacturers would make their drivers easily accessible for an automated utility to interrogate and download. Therefore, I imagine such utilities would only work for popular device types and manufacturers. While this is a good idea in theory, it could also be quite dangerous particularly if the utility does not work correctly and installs drivers which may be incorrect or incompatible with other devices or software on your computer. Therefore, I would recommend that you continue to update drivers manually. This is a much safer and more reliable method to update the drivers on your computer.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
