Text Not Printing

  • After several years of ownership my Canon PIXMA iP6000D printer will no longer print text, although graphics still print alright. After completing a deep clean and maintenance (including nozzle check) a test page from Windows will only print the Windows logo and no text. Connecting the printer to a different computer produced the same problem, so it does not seem to be computer dependent. I have tried changing the text colour from black to red and it printed the text, albeit in red colour. I then installed a new black ink cartridge, completed a clean, but it still does not output text in black. It seems that the black jet is not getting a signal for some reason. Do you have any other suggestions?

    You have certainly undertaken some comprehensive troubleshooting steps to determine that the black jet within the printer is not working. Normally when black does not work this indicates either the ink cartridge has been exhausted or there is a blockage in the jet preventing the black ink from flowing. However, you have eliminated both these possible causes of the problem by replacing the ink cartridge and also completing a full clean and maintenance operation on the printer including a nozzle check. Furthermore, having connected the printer to a completely different computer also rules out the possibility of something wrong with the printer installation. Therefore, at this point it is probably safe to assume that the fault lies with the printer itself. Home printer hardware faults generally spell the end of life for such printers. Given the inexpensive nature of home printers (particularly inkjets), the cost involved in having the printer repaired is often not economical as you can purchase a new printer for a fraction of the cost. Therefore, I would suggest that you seriously consider replacing this printer rather than attempting to have it fixed.
