There appears to be a problem with the graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT) running on a newly built computer with the following specifications: Intel Quad Core Q8200 2.33 GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, with Windows XP Service Pack 3. Whenever I run a relatively recent game (such as Prince of Persia, Fallout 3, etc.), on the highest graphics settings, all of the games have a graphics-related crash. This either involves the screen being filled with incorrectly rendered textures, or crashing with a blue screen and a message saying that the drive is stuck within an infinite loop. I have tried reinstalling DirectX 9.0 together with the NVIDIA drivers, but this has not resolved the problem. Do you have any suggestions? (more…)

Last year I updated from an old computer (running Windows 98 SE) to a brand new machine running Windows XP. However, I have found that several problems (including a Chinese language program which I used for quite some time on my old computer) will no longer run on this new computer. Several people who I have asked are also unable to get this program running, and the computer dealer said the reason for this problem is that the new machine has a dual-core processor which will not work with older programs. Disabling the firewall and antivirus programs when loading the program has not resolved the problem. Can you assist? (more…)

Last year Microsoft released the free Microsoft Security Essentials package. This is a free antivirus package for Windows XP SP2 and SP3 (32-bit), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit), and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit). This may be well worth a look for users who are considering a free antivirus software package. Microsoft Security Essentials is available for free download at www.microsoft.com/security_essentials .

When I click a website link within an email Internet Explorer opens and a message appears saying “Buffer overrun detected. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.RXE” and then Internet Explorer closes down. In an attempt to fix this problem I updated Internet Explorer but now I am unable to access Internet Explorer at all as the same message appears all the time. How can I fix this problem? The computer is running Windows XP. (more…)

When I click on a website link in a Microsoft Outlook email, rather than going to the web page the following error message appears: “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator”. This has only happened recently. The computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium. (more…)
