Cannot virus scan certain files

  • Advast Antivirus identifies the following four files that it is “Unable to scan: Incorrect Function”:
    • C:\WINDOWS\installer\$PatchCache$\Manager\00002119F20000000000000000F01FEC\12.0.6425\FOUNDRY.THMX
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepositopry\usbport.inf_72bc7c47\usbport.sys
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepositopry\usbport.inf_35521f61\usbport.sys
Advast cannot repair, move, move to chest, or scan these files. If I select “Delete” it advises that the “File was marked to be deleted during the following system start…” but after restarting and completing another scan the same errors are found. What are these files and what action should be taken to correct these errors?

These errors are nothing to be concerned about as they relate to system files on your computer in locations which the antivirus scanner cannot access. There are some areas of the Windows file system that are protected, meaning that only the system can access those files due to their importance or need to maintain the integrity of the files. Additionally, sometimes files which are in-use by the system cannot be scanned since the antivirus scanner cannot exclusively open the file for scanning, as it is already opened by the system. In these cases you will receive an error that the antivirus scanner is unable to scan the file, and it also cannot do any operations on the file (such as moving to quarantine or deletion). Even though you are marking the files for deletion they are not being deleted on the system restart as the operating system is protecting those files. The deletion would work on normal files, since restarting the computer would close any other programs which are using the file and then the deletion can take place before the programs have a chance to relaunch following the restart, and then re-access the file. In this case though, because they are protected files you will never be able to delete them (which is a good thing, since the files seem to be rather critical files which you probably don’t want to delete!).

It is likely that there are plenty of other files which your antivirus scanner is unable to scan, but they are not displayed, since most antivirus scanners have a known list of files and locations which are inaccessible and don’t bother to even prompt you about the inability to scan in those locations. The messages are likely appearing in your case because the files are perhaps in a non-standard location which the antivirus scanner would not have listed as a restricted path that does not allow scanning.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
