Page setup slows computer
By skid on July 24, 2000 | No Comments
I am running WordPerfect 9 on a 486 DX100 with 32 RAM and 1 gig hard disk with Windows 95. I have a Canon BJC-2000SP printer. When I use Page Setup to change from portrait to landscape or vice versa the setup screen greys out for a minute and generally after this response times and performance become so hopeless I have to shut down the program. I have made extra space on the hard disk and used the defragmenting program to no effect. I would appreciate your help. (more…)

Bad request, error No CCC31
By skid on July 24, 2000 | No Comments
In one of your previous columns, you gave advice on setting up Outlook Express to retrieve Hotmail messages. I tried the procedure detailed on the website you referred to (httpmail.webhostme.com/exception.htm), but I still get ‘Bad request, error No CCC31…’ message. I have also approached my ISP who advised me to untick ‘use proxy server’ in favour of ‘use automatic configuration script’ but no joy. Any other thoughts please? (more…)

Access to the specified device, path or file is denied
By skid on July 17, 2000 | No Comments
I have an innocuous but annoying problem when opening graphics files attached to emails. I am using a Pentium II with Windows 98, and run Eudora Pro 4.2 for email. When I double click on the graphics file in an email, it opens my chosen default program for viewing which is Kodak Imaging for Windows. The image opens, then Imaging goes to the background and I get a Windows error message saying “Access to the specified device, path or file is denied”. I click OK and then just choose Imaging from the task bar and everything is fine. How can I stop this error message from appearing? (more…)

Performance Analyser Program for Windows errors
By skid on July 17, 2000 | No Comments
When I try to open the help in Performance Analyser Program for Windows (PAWIN v1.3) I get three error messages. Firstly, ‘Help Navigator can’t initiate connection with WinHelp’. When I click the ‘Ok’ button the second message appears, which reads ‘Winhlp32: An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click ‘Ignore’ and save your work in a new file. To quit this program click ‘Close’. Clicking the ‘Close’ button produces the third error message stating ‘Winhlp32: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor’. Under ‘Details’ it says that ‘Winhlp32 caused an invalid page fault in module WHLP16T.DLL at….’. I have a Thinkpad 770Z with Windows 98 SE installed. However, the strange thing is that I can load PAWIN onto my other computer (a Thinkpad 765D) with Windows 95 on it with no problems (I get the first message but after that everything is ok). I upgraded this computer to Windows 98 Second Edition as well without any problems occurring in PAWIN. Why is this problem only occurring on my new 770Z and not my old 765D as both machines are almost identical (ie. same operating system, same PAWIN files, etc…)? (more…)

Backup C drive
By skid on July 10, 2000 | No Comments
A while ago while backing up my system, to enable me to then compress my C drive to create an H drive, I ran out of spare disks and had to abort until I got some more. Since then I have found I have been unable to backup and am now running low on space within my C drive. How can I overcome this? I seem to get to the point where it starts the final backup process, then it freezes. Also another problem I have is with a disk I got with a computer magazine. It seems to load ok but when I go into view the program it comes up with: ‘Garden caused a general protection fault in module garden.exe. at 0004:00002855. Can you tell me what this means please? Thank you. (more…)
