Dual Layer DVD Reliability
By skid on February 1, 2010 in CD/DVD | No Comments
On more than one occasion when I have copied data to a dual-layer DVD the data has gone missing from the DVD. That is, when I insert the DVD into the computer and read the DVD the data is not present. Would changing to a different brand of dual layer DVDs prevent the loss of this material? Also, are dual-layer DVDs as reliable as single layer DVDs? On a separate issue, I have successfully saved some YouTube videos on my computer using the Any Video Converter utility. The videos play perfectly fine on my computer in Windows Media Player, but when I attempt to play the same download on another computer only the audio is played. Why is this video restricted to only playing correctly on my home computer? The computer is running Windows XP. (more…)

CD Drive Fails to Read Some CDs
By skid on March 16, 2009 in CD/DVD | No Comments
An intermittent problem with my CD/DVD has become chronic. The drive has on occasion been unable to read CDs, particularly games CDs. When I insert a CD into the drive Windows does not recognise the CD and Windows Explorer simply shows the CD drive as empty and not having a disc inserted. However, if I leave the CD in the drive I am able to launch games which need to use the CD, yet Windows will not recognise the CD as being inserted in the drive. Windows Device Manager says the drive is operating correctly and when I insert a CD the drive light blinks indicating that power is going to the drive. Uninstalling then reinstalling the drive does not fix the problem. I have also blasted the CD drive internals with compressed air, in case there was any dust or alike clogging the internals of the drive, but this has not fixed the problem. The computer is running Windows XP SP2. (more…)

CD-RW/DVD Drivers
By skid on August 11, 2008 in CD/DVD | No Comments
The CD-RW/DVD drive on my Windows XP has stopped working and displays the message “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39). Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device”. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device within the Device Manager, but the same message appears. Downloading and reinstalling the drivers for the device does not resolve the issue. Can you help to restore my CD-RW/DVD drive to operation? (more…)

Blue Screen While Creating DVD
By skid on July 28, 2008 in CD/DVD | No Comments
When creating a DVD using Sonic everything works alright until the “Make Compatible” step, when about half way through this stage the blue screen of death appears and the computer immediately restarts. This all happens so fast I cannot write down the error message that appears. I have ensured that “Use with DLA” is enabled on the drive and I am using compatible DVD+R discs with the burner. The computer is running Windows XP. (more…)

DVD writer very slow
By skid on March 19, 2007 in CD/DVD | No Comments
My computer had a major spyware infection so I reinstalled Windows. Since doing so, whenever I attempt to burn a CD the process can take up to 40 minutes, whereas it only took about 10 minutes before the reinstallation. The DVD drive has been replaced under warranty but the problem persists. Is it possible the computer is missing some software required for the drive to function? The computer is running Windows XP with a 16x DVD-RW drive. (more…)
