When using Nero to burn a CD the burn stopped at 52%. I restarted Nero with a new blank CD and it only completed 34%. Reinstalling Nero did not fix the problem, and the system still refuses to complete the full burn. What is wrong? A second unrelated problem is the Windows desktop background wallpaper does not appear. I have tried changing the background wallpaper, but even this does not make the background wallpaper appear. The computer is running Windows XP.

Following upgrading to Windows Media Player 7 the sound would no longer function. I uninstalled Media Player 7 and reverted back to the old version, but now whenever I try to access the CD-ROM drive (regardless of what kind of CD is inserted) the following message appears: ‘E: Not accessible. The device is not ready’. The Device Manager claims the drive is working correctly, and rebooting the computer does not fix the issue. The computer is running Windows 98 SE. (more…)

Whenever attempting to copy a CD using Nero 6 a ‘write error’ occurs, and the copying process stops. I have attempted to locally cache the source CD to the hard drive, then copy to the destination CD, but this does not work. The Ricoh Dual Layer DVD burner was returned to Ricoh (to check whether the drive was faulty) and returned as fixed but with no comment as to the cause of the problem. However, the problem remains. I also cannot write CDs using Windows Media Player, but am able to write CDs using Real Player 10.5. I can also write DVDs fine, so only copying to CDs causes problems. The computer has an 80 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. (more…)

When attempting to copy files to CD through Windows XP the following message appears ‘D: Not accessible. Incorrect function’. However, I can read CDs correctly and also burn music to CDs (using CD burning software) with no problem. Why can’t I copy files to CD? (more…)

During the BIOS check the computer beeps twice and displays the following message: ‘Sec master Drive ATAPI incompatible’. The computer continues to load normally, but the DVD drive is no longer recognised in Windows and does not display with the other drives in My Computer. In the Device Manager, the Maxtor 4D040H2 DVD drive is displayed under ‘Disk drives’ with the status claiming the device is functioning properly. Attempts to update the drivers for the device did not succeed. The drive itself appears to be working correctly, as the light blinks and after inserting a CD or DVD the drive spins-up. It seems that Windows simply does not recognize the drives existence. The problem only occurred recently. (more…)
