Playing DVDs remotely
By skid on May 3, 2004 in CD/DVD | No Comments
The local area network at home uses Windows XP and we would like it to share a DVD drive. The drive can be shared over the network, but will not play DVDs remotely. The DVD software doesn’t seem to allow you to modify the default drive. Is there anyway around this or is there some other software that we could try? (more…)

Computer no longer reads two CDs
By skid on March 29, 2004 in CD/DVD | No Comments
My computer is no longer able to view two read-only data CDs. These CDs are 6-years and 3-months old respectively. Both CDs are in pristine condition (no scratches). I was able to read these CDs with no problems until now but they no longer work on any computer. I could not copy the older CD, but the copy that I made of the newer, showed the same problem of the original: some files are not read. Though not being able to copy it, I am able to read some files of the older CD; but hundreds of files are, simply, omitted, though I am sure that the files are on the disk. In addition, an odd popping sound is heard when reading the older CD. My understanding was that a CD should last some 200 years. I have many, many other CDs containing archival data, that are absolutely not replaceable. (more…)

Burning DVD through Windows
By skid on February 23, 2004 in CD/DVD | No Comments
My LITE-ON LDW-411S DVD+/-R recorder is having problems recognising recordable DVD disks. Whenever I load a blank DVD-R or DVD+R into the drive (regardless of the media’s brand) the label for the DVD drive in ‘My Computer’ changes from ‘DVD-RW Drive’ to ‘CD Drive’ and reports that there is 0 bytes data. Then, when attempting to copy data onto the DVD a message appears that the disk is full. The same error occurs regardless of which burning software is used (e.g., Windows Explorer, Alcohol 120%, Nero, and CloneCD). The drive can play DVDs and CDs correctly. The computer is a PIII 733 MHz with 256 MB RAM running Windows XP. (more…)
