Windows not recognising ejected CD
By skid on July 15, 2002 in CD/DVD | No Comments
I run Windows 98 and whenever I play a music CD on my computer it runs fine. However, when I try to eject the CD using the button on the front of the CD drive the computer still thinks there is a music CD in the drive. It’ll even show me how many tracks there were on the CD. This can be temporarily fixed by either going into ‘My Computer’ and right clicking the D: drive and clicking ‘Eject’ or by pressing the eject button in CD Player. Is there a way I can permanently fix this problem? (more…)

Buffer underrun
By skid on November 5, 2001 in CD/DVD | No Comments
I recently installed a 2x/4x/8x CD writer as a slave CD drive on my PC (Windows 98 SE, 10 GB, 128mb RAM). Three audio CDs were successfully copied from my CD ROM but after that the writer only completed one track before closing the session due to a buffer underrun. When I changed the write speed from 8x to 4x (on the advice of the CD writer vendor) the same problem occurred. The vendor then suggested that I drop the speed to 2x, however, the session closed also immediately having not even copied one full track). Do you have any suggestions to fix this problem? I also appear to have the KAK worm virus. Can you provide me with instructions to remove this virus? (more…)

Audio CDs on CD-ROM drive
By skid on October 22, 2001 in CD/DVD | No Comments
When playing from audio CDs on my CD-ROM no sound comes through the PC speakers. The CD-ROM works because I can listen to CDs via the headphone jack on the CD-ROM and data CD’s play alright in the CD-ROM. The CD Player software utility works as I can select tracks to play and control the sound from audio CDs coming out of the headphone jack on the CD ROM drive. Finally, the speakers work because there is sound when playing PC games. Do you have any suggestions? If this is relevant, when listening to CDs via the headphone jack on the front of the CD ROM drive, there is no sound from the speakers. Is this a physical disconnection or software controlled? CD-ROM drivers for boot disk
By skid on January 15, 2001 in CD/DVD | No Comments
I don’t know all that much about computers but over the years I’ve managed to pick up a few things. I’m now attempting to ‘do up’ an old 486 DX2. I’ve formatted the hard drive and made a boot disk with the drivers for the CD-ROM. When I start the PC it tells me that it has detected the CD-ROM. So far so good. Where my problem lies is I can’t switch to the CD-ROM to load Windows 95 from a CD. I’ve tried everything I can think of and anything anyone else has suggested but I just can’t switch to the CD-ROM. Where am I going wrong? (more…)
