Old game not loading
By skid on May 20, 2002 in Games | No Comments
I have an old (and much-loved) game called ‘Zeppelin - Giants of the Sky’ produced in 1994 by Microprose (Ikarion Software). The game comes on three floppy disks. It ran well on my old Compaq LTE 386 laptop with Windows 3.1 but it will not load (or run!) on my Pentium II 233 MHz laptop. I’ve been told that this is a common problem with old games. Is there anyway to get around the problem? (more…)

Need for Speed screen blank
By skid on March 11, 2002 in Games | No Comments
I own the game Need For Speed: High Stakes and it normally works well on our computer (running Windows 98) with no glitches. A while ago I stopped playing and recently, since I tried to play it again, it has a problem. The auto-start screen which opens whenever I put in the CD worked fine, but when I start the program, the screen goes completely blank (black). All the sound works fine, and the demos that happen normally when you don’t do anything are audible but I can’t see anything on the screen, and the brightness control on the screen has no effect. The actual program is working properly because I can use the keyboard to enter all the menus and everything, and hear the sounds from them, and I can exit the program with the keyboard, but the screen is completely blank until the program is closed, when everything returns to normal. We have reinstalled the program, but it makes no difference. No other programs have experienced any problems like this. If you can offer any suggestions of things to check, it would be very much appreciated. (more…)

Cannot play games over internet
By skid on August 6, 2001 in Games | No Comments
Recently I installed Windows 2000 Professional on my computer in dual-boot mode with Windows 98 SE. Counter-Strike, Half-Life and Tribes 2 all worked well under this system (I was playing games under Windows 98 SE) until I tried to use Win 2K to connect to the internet. At this point my modem settings and drivers changed from the NetComm 56K Internal (Inmodem 5692) to a Win Modem. I changed the drivers
back to the InModem 5692 drivers and then tried to play Counter-Strike and Tribes 2. They work fine in LAN play mode, but when I try to connect to the World Opponent Network Counter-Strike freezes on me and Tribes 2 says that it cannot connect to any WON servers. My modem surfs the net correctly, so I don’t think there is a problem there. What I do think is that when Windows 2000 changed the settings this also changed the settings in Windows 98 and either damaged the modem, or changed a port setting somewhere. I have tried re-installing Counter-Strike and Tribes 2, but to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated. (more…) -
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 crashes after menu
By skid on August 6, 2001 in Games | No Comments
I use Windows 98 with 64mb RAM and a 6 GB hard drive. I bought ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2′ but when I go to the menu which asks to choose ‘Single Player’ or anything else the game does not go further and crashes to the desktop. I reinstalled the program several times but with the same result. I installed the CD on another PC and it worked very well. Any suggestions? (more…)
