Drive A system error

Three months ago I put together a system using the WinChip C6 (roughly equivalent to a Pentium 200) with a ASUS P/I-P55T2P4 M/B and 32 mb RAM and had no problems - ran Windows 98 very well and a host of applications including internet. Two weeks ago the system hung while I was running some applications, I suspect I was pushing it a bit in terms of available memory. When I rebooted, I got the following start up message:
“Award bootlock Bios V1.0 Bios ROM Checksum error detecting floppy drive A media….. Drive A error system halt” accompanied by an error noise. I changed the floppy drive, and got identical results, so its not the drive. I seem to remember reading about a drive A error associated with Winchip in their old web site (at www.winchip.com/index2.html) but there’s no mention in their current site (www.centtech.com/) (more…) -

You may recall that I wrote to you about my computer freezing up and you kindly replied in the Canberra Times on 10th January. I have reinstalled Windows 98 on a new hard drive and the problem exists as before. I have no spare IRQ’s. Where do I go from here? (more…)

Auto wakeup

Every night at midnight my computer springs to life even after it has been properly shut down!.I run Windows ‘98 on a Compaq Presario Pentium(R) MMX running at 166Mhz. Can you please restore my sleeping pattern without having to turn off the power to the computer every night! Thanks! (more…)

Reset to boot

The problem that I have is when I turn the computer on I have to reset three times before the computer comes on. I have changed the hard disk, the case, I have updated the bios, and the motherboard is jumperless. Can you please help?

I downloaded a file with a *.bin extension and was 1.5Mb which seems to contain a lot of *.jpg files but I can’t seem to extract them. Also, can I surf the web while still downloading a file without affecting speed or integrity of download? What would you rate as a reasonable data transfer-3 Kb/sec or more. I don’t wish to hang around a “slow” site! (more…)
