The computer is fast running out of space in the C: drive. This is causing all sorts of problems, such as printing not working occasionally because of lack of free disk space. The hard drive is partitioned into two drives
    ‘¢ C: drive - available space: 22 MB of 2047 MB (FAT)
    ‘¢ D: drive - available space: 2468 MB of 2834 MB (FAT32)
What can I do to boost the available space on the C: drive? I don’t particularly want a D drive and would rather have more space on C. The computer is running Windows 98 with 64 MB of RAM. (more…)

Recently a new hard drive was installed into my computer. How can I install the old hard drive into the computer so that I can access this drive through Windows? What cables, jumper settings, and BIOS changes are needed? The computer is running Windows 98, but I am considering upgrading to Windows NT. (more…)

Every second or so the computer hard disk is accessed, making a ‘clock-clock’ sound with the hard-drive light blinking twice. During the day, the noise is almost unnoticeable but at night it is distracting and stressful. This seems to happen constantly, even when my only interaction with the computer is reading text on screen. I noticed the rattle since the very first time I used Windows XP, which came pre-installed together with some utility and other programs provided by IBM. I suspect that something requires a read/write cycle to the disk every second in order to function. The computer is an IBM ThinkCentre A50p Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with 512 MB of memory, running Windows XP Home Edition. (more…)

How can I keep 750 MB - 1 GB of free hard drive space? Currently, I have used space of 2.85 GB and free space of 144 MB which causes the message ‘Insufficient Disk Space’ to appear quite often. The computer is running Windows Me (upgraded from Windows 95) with Microsoft Office 97 and Quicken. Can you help? (more…)

My new computer has a 60 GB hard drive compared with my older computer’s 7 GB drive. I would like to partition this drive but have little knowledge on the theory behind partitioning. By this I mean not how to do the actual partitioning but, rather, why to partition, how many partitions are the optimum, which size(s) to give to each partition, what to put in each partition and why, etc’¦ Can you help?
