Streaming TV Problem
By skid on November 7, 2011 in Internet and email | No Comments
When visiting some Australian TV channel websites to catch-up on some TV viewing by watching the streaming version of shows, the following message appears: “You are unauthorised to watch this video as you are in the wrong location”. I am unsure what this means or how it can be fixed. The computer is running Windows XP. (more…)

Internet Explorer Error on Page
By skid on October 10, 2011 in Internet and email | No Comments
Before my home page starts to download, a yellow triangle containing a black exclamation mark appears in the left-hand corner of the bottom tray. As downloading commences, the triangle is joined by the words “Error on page”. Once the download has finished the words change to “Done, but with errors on page” although there are no apparent errors. After a few seconds, the words disappear but the triangle remains on permanently. As each subsequent page of the website is downloaded, the sequence of error messages is repeated. Neither the triangle nor the error messages appear with any other website or when accessing emails. The computer is running Windows XP SP3. How can I remove this annoyance? (more…)

Ports 21 and 443 open on router
By skid on September 19, 2011 in Internet and email | No Comments
Recently I replaced my Netgear DG834G v4 router with a new Netgear DGND3700. The installation went well and I was happy with the improved performance. However, when I subjected the new installation to the Gibson ShieldsUp! Tests it reported that ports 21 and 443 are open on the DGND3700. Previously all of the ports had been in stealth mode so this was quite a surprise. I immediately contacted Netgear Support and was advised that this may have something to do with the antivirus software installed on the computer, although the antivirus vendor disagrees. Back again to Netgear who now advise that ports 21 and 443 must be left open. I await further explanation, but do not hold out much hope. Could you bring some of your common sense expertise to the problem? The computer is running Windows XP. The router has an inbuilt firewall but the Windows firewall is also turned-on. I understand that two firewalls are not desirable but I am reluctant to disable the Windows Firewall until my faith in the Netgear protection is restored. (more…)

Recover Outlook Email
By skid on September 5, 2011 in Internet and email | No Comments
My previous Windows XP had a terminal hardware failure, and before disposing of the computer I kept the hard drive as that contained all of my data (and it is still in working order). I would now like to recover a number of Outlook emails to my new Windows 7 computer also running Microsoft Outlook. I plan to use a USB disk caddy to transfer the relevant data from the old hard drive onto my new computer. Can you provide any advice or assistance with this task? (more…)

Outlook Opens PDFs in Word
By skid on August 29, 2011 in Internet and email | No Comments
Following some computer problems I reinstalled Windows 7 and supporting software. Unfortunately, before installing Adobe Reader I attempted to open a PDF file attached to an email. A message appeared asking which program I would like to use to open the file and I selected Microsoft Word. From that point onwards whenever I attempted to open a PDF file it always opened in Word which cannot read PDF files, instead showing an error message. I have now installed Adobe Reader and can open saved PDF files through the Adobe Reader program. However, I still cannot open PDF files attached to email messages as they continue to open in Microsoft Word. It seems that Windows does not recognise that I have installed Adobe Reader and this is a better program to open PDF files. How can I reset the system to open PDF files in Adobe Reader? (more…)
