Recently I purchased a new computer plus a new 56K modem. The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. My ISP set-up gave me no problems using my old computer, however, as soon as I tried accessing the internet with my new set-up I had five different error messages (718, 678, 734, 721, and 797). The connection only takes place after I turn off the computer and back on again (of course) and only then after several more attempts. When a connection is established, the access time is unacceptable (up to a minute). I have contacted the ISP who suggested putting two commas in front of and after the phone number (done) and extra modem initialisation command (at&fx3). But neither suggestion has fixed the problem. My Pentium 200, 64 MB RAM, 2 GB HDD runs Windows 98. Previously the set up was a Pentium 75 with a 56k Tasmanian Devil external modem working and connected to the net. Since upgrading the computer and installing a SVGA video card, the modem won’t work. Wiping the hard drive and installing the modem again has not fixed the problem. Can you help? (more…)

I have obtained an old Pentium running Windows 95. I have attempted to install the internal modem from my 486 in the Pentium but have not been able to connect even though I have had the telephone assistance of my internet provider who has told me what to check and held my hand while doing all the checks. A friend told me that an internal modem would not work on a Pentium and that I should buy an external modem. My question is ‘is this right?’. The internal modem is a 33.6 and works when installed in the 486. A standard modem driver is used and it is installed on COM3. (more…)
