Having just entered cyberspace last month for the prime motive of accessing the net, my partner and I have been tormented by being kicked off the net consistently after only 5, 10, sometimes 20 minutes. Sometimes less! We had Telstra do a comprehensive MOLDS test (lines OK), we have taken disconnected the phone, disabled call waiting, surfed after midnight, called our ISP, and still gotten no joy. Telstra gave us some strings to put in modems extra settings but that didn’t help. Could it be our ISP? (more…)

My ISP is OzEmail. I run windows 98, I have a Netcomm Roadster II 56k SVD and I live in Nicholls. Although I have a 56k modem, according to the Windows dialog box in the bottom of the page I only connect at 28000bps. I am into gaming such as Quake and Halflife and my ping times are 270+. Recently my friend used my modem and ISP account in Spence on his computer, he connected at 56000bps and his ping times were in the low 200’s. What is going on? Why am I connecting at 28000bps and have consistently higher ping times. I have installed all the latest drivers, used different initialisation strings, ensured my modem connect at 56k speed but to no avail. Can you help me? Would different suburbs have such a dramatic effect on ping times? (more…)

I’m running Windows 98 with a Pentium II 300, I recently formatted my computer and when I was reinstalling my modem drivers I came across an error on my disk. The disk is version 2.1 , I’ve obtained from the internet version 2.2 because that’s as close a match as I can get. Now I can’t get Internet Explorer to work because the Microsoft Referral Service is not running properly. It says it’s connecting but after a minute of that my modem disconnects the call. Now I can’t run Internet Explorer or Outlook Express which is what I want. (more…)

My modem [Hayes Accura external.fax modem] hangs up after 20-40 minutes. My ISP advised me to reduce the speed to38400. This didn’t help. The Modem Log Shows this: ‘15:20:21 Connection established’, than at ‘15:51:19 -Hanging up the modem’ and again at 15:51:19. ‘Hardware hangup by lowering DTR’. How can I prevent this from occurring ? It is very annoying. Thank you in anticipation. (more…)
