I installed Corel Draw onto my computer and it appears to have converted all of my JPEG (*.jpg) files into DIB files. As a result, none of my scanned documents and pictures that were saved in this manner can be opened anymore. When I attempt to open them, the error message appears that the computer ‘Cannot open xxx.jpg (or one of its components)’ and ‘xxx.jpg is not a Legitimate DIB file’. What is a DIB file and how can I transform such file back into a JPEG one file? Furthermore, the JPEG file icons now show a camera instead of a paint pot. Do you have any suggestions as to why this occurred and most importantly how I can fix it? I am running Windows 98 with Office 2000 Premium, a CanoScan FB 320P on a Pentium 166. (more…)

  • No sound through headphones

Whenever I go to play a sound file on my PC (a Compaq Deskpro) the sound only comes out of the speaker and not the headphones. When the headphones are plugged in I hear a click, followed by a soft “kshh” sound, but the music itself comes through the speaker. Incidentally, the volume dial under the CD-ROM seems to have no effect on the volume level; it seems that I can only control the volume through whatever software I’m using. (more…)

I run WindowsMe with a Celeron 600mhz, 160mb RAM and a total of 26gb hard drive space. My problem is that I cannot access certain screen savers (eg. Organic art). When I try to use them I get a message ‘Couldn’t find any scene definitions in ‘.’ - reinstall’. I have installed every available screen saver through the Control Panel’s ‘Add/Remove Programs’ but with no luck. Can you help please? (more…)

I recently downloaded a desktop theme from the internet and I’m having some trouble with the sound. I can go to the file in my C drive that I’ve unzipped and play the wave files from there, but some of the longer ones won’t play when they’re applied to my sound scheme by my theme manager or manually through the control panel. I get a message saying that I should make sure that audio compression is installed, but to the best of my knowledge it already is. Would you be able to tell me what I’m doing wrong? (more…)

  • Quicktime error - Could not draw this picture

I have Windows 98 running on a Pentium 233 with an SIS 6326 4MB Video Accelerator card, and 64 RAM. I recently installed Encyclopaedia Britannica and have a problem with a section on Human Anatomy which I understand consists of many picture plates. Clicking on the relevant icon in the menu produces no result but when identifying and clicking a relevant file (eg. the foot ) in Explorer I get the following message from Picture Viewer: “Could not draw this picture. It may not be recognised by QuickTime for Windows or you could be low on memory”. I don’t know if it is relevant, but tests on Direct Draw and Direct 3D were successful, and QuickTime for Windows seems OK. Any suggestions please? (more…)
