VREDIR.VXD, DFS.DXD, and msnp32.dll
By skid on November 26, 2001 in Networking | No Comments
Recently I contacted the EasyMail help line, with a view to improving my despatch times for e-mails with attachments. I was instructed to go to the ‘Control Panel’ > ‘Network’ and to delete Client for Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Logon, Dial up Adaptor, TCP/IP and in Primary Network logon to select ‘Microsoft Family Logon’. These were subsequently re-installed, and everything in Easymail works OK. Now, when I ‘boot up’ I get the following error messages: (on a black and white screen): “Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application: VREDIR.VXD and DFS.DXD Press any key to continue’. Following that instruction brings up a Windows Networking dialogue box: “Unable to load the dynamic link library: msnp32.dll. The system cannot find the file specified. Some or all of the following feature is not available: Micosoft Network.’
Clicking ‘OK’, completes the ‘boot up’ satisfactorily. No program or feature seems to be affected by the missing file, but it is a pain in the neck to complete the ‘boot up’ sequence. I am running Windows 98 Second Edition. Can you help? (more…) -
Entire Network doesn’t browse network
By skid on September 24, 2001 in Networking | No Comments
Two of my computer systems run WindowsMe and a third, older machine, runs Windows 95. All three computers are networked together. I can do IP pings between all the PCs and I can access any shareable folders from any of the three PCs to any shareable resource. However, the ‘Entire Network’ browser doesn’t work on one machine. When I open ‘Network Neighbourhood’ on the Windows 95 machine, all three machines are visible in the window. When I open ‘Entire Network’ I see the network icon labelled with my workgroup name. On one of the WindowsMe machines (being used as the ICS server), when ‘My Network Places’ is opened and then ‘Entire Network’, I also see the network icon labelled with my workgroup and, on opening the network icon, all three computers can be seen. However, on the second WindowsMe machine when I open ‘My Network Places’ then ‘Entire network’ sometimes the machine displays a message saying the network cannot be browsed and on other occasions ‘0 Objects’ is at the bottom of the ‘Entire Network’ window. Any ideas what causes this ? (more…)

I administer a small network of computers in a local training centre. The network has internet access via an ADSL modem. Is there any way that I can stop people downloading EXE and ZIP files from the internet? The network is peer to peer with all computers running Windows NT 4 workstation. Thanks for your help. (more…)

WNetGetUser returned
By skid on February 22, 1999 in Networking | No Comments
When going into the net I am usually confronted by a dialogue box headed ‘WNetGetUser returned’. In the body of the box is the number 1 and an ‘OK’ button. If I do not click OK I am unable to establish a connection. I am told that my user name or password is invalid. If I do click OK I get a connection. Sometimes the box does not appear when attempting connection and on these occasions I am unable connect - the user name or password is said to be invalid. How can I get rid of this? (more…)
