Whenever I open a Microsoft Office program (such as Word or Excel) a window appears titled “Windows Installer”. After clicking the “Cancel” button twice the message disappears, but this is quite annoying when I just want to open Word to do some simple word processing. Whenever I print a Word document line numbers are always added (such as you might find in a legal document or a contract). I have trawled through the various menus but have been quite unable to find a way to turn this (very annoying) feature off. I am using Word 2003 and Windows XP. (more…)

When I try to open some very old Word documents (made with Word 2.0) in Word 2003 on Windows XP a message appears saying “You are attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy setting”. I could not find a way to change this policy setting or an explanation of the implications of these changes. Most of my incoming emails have an attachment icon which when clicked shows my own Microsoft Works Calendar page. However, this does not happen with all email messages. This problem is driving me nuts so I would appreciate your advice! (more…)
