General protection Fault User.exe
By skid on February 26, 2001 in Office | No Comments
Whenever I try running Word 2000, Excel 2000, Power Point 2000, or Publisher 97 the system comes back with ‘Program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. General protection Fault User.exe @ 0005.0000070e’ and also lists a set of register addresses. This happened when I started using Outlook Express to access my email through another server. I am using Windows 98, Office 2000, and Publisher 97 on a portable Toshiba 430cds. Can you help? Thanks. (more…)

Word Web toolbar
By skid on January 15, 2001 in Office | No Comments
I use Word 2000 on quite a few documents with tables of contents. I normally only have the Standard and Formatting toolbars active. However if I click the cursor on a page in the table of contents to go to that page, Word 2000 automatically starts the Web toolbar. I don’t use that toolbar, and don’t want to lose that portion of my screen that it uses. Is there a way to prevent the Web toolbar opening every time I click on a page in the table of contents? The file Normal.dot already exists
By skid on October 2, 2000 in Office | No Comments
I hope you can help with this problem with Microsoft Word 2000 and Windows 98. When closing any Word document (even a blank one) I get the following message: ‘The file Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?’ I click ‘No’ and then get a Save As screen. It opens at the ‘Templates’ directory which contains two files: ‘~$normal.dot’ (indicates an open doc) and ‘normal.dot’ (indicates a word doc). Word wants to save the file as ‘normal.dot’. When I press ‘Save’ the following message appears ‘The file Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?’. I answer ‘No’ and click on the close box. If I press ‘Yes’ I immediately get the message ‘This program has performed an illegal operation…’. After clicking ‘No’ and ‘Close’ I get a message: ‘Changes have been made that affect the global template Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?’ If I answer ‘Yes’, it will not let me proceed. When I answer ‘No’ I then get the message ‘This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists contact the program vendor. Details: Winword caused an invalid page fault in module
at 0000:82blf99e’. When I press ‘Close’ the program closes ok. This problem was not present when I first installed Word. I cannot recall when it started. I cannot find any open document using the normal.dot template. Is it doing any harm to just close it in the way described? Thank you in anticipation. (more…) -
This file is in use C:WINDOWS…TEMPLATENORMAL.DOT
By skid on October 2, 2000 in Office | No Comments
I am using Windows 98 and Word 2000. Each time I save a file in Word I get the message ‘This file is in use by another application or user C:WINDOWS…TEMPLATENORMAL.DOT’. I click OK and get a Save As screen containing the Normal.dot Word file. If I then click Save it says it is a Read Only file and will not let me save. If I click Cancel then I get a blank (grey) Word screen. Finally, if I Close this I then get the message ‘Changes have been made which affect the normal template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save?’ I click ‘No’ and at last the document is saved. Is this normal? It seems to be as I had the same problem with Word 2000 with Windows 95 on another computer, but it is an annoying exercise to go through. (more…)

C:DIR00001 file or directory is damaged and is currently unusable
By skid on September 25, 2000 in Office | No Comments
I would like to update my Microsoft Word application from Word 7.0 to Word 2000. When I load the setup program it says that I must first run the Microsoft ScanDisk to make sure my C drive is Ok. When I run ScanDisk a message appears saying ‘ScanDisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it’. The only option is to press Ok (which I do). ScanDisk keeps checking but another problem comes up under Directory Structure ‘The C:DIR00001 file or directory is damaged and is currently unusable’. When I click the ‘Fix It’ button the above message just continues to appear and I end up having to cancel the operation. When I look at my C: drive the ‘DIR00001′ file is there but I cannot delete the file. I also tried to delete this directory through the MS-DOS mode of the computer by using the command ‘del C:DIR00001′ (suggested by a friend) but the message ‘Path not found’ appears. What is this file and can I delete it somehow? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as all I want to do is update my Word application. (more…)
