Excel runing slow
By skid on June 19, 2000 in Office | No Comments
I have a Dell 233 running under Windows 98. I now have a major problem when running Excel 97. I recently developed a small spreadsheet to analyse vehicle fuel usage and cost for each month of the year. It seems to run slow when entering data even though I am not doing any calculations at that time but the real problem is that after a relatively short time a message appears ‘Not enough memory’, ‘Not enough resources’ or just ‘Not enough’. The system freezes and CTL+ALT+DEL does not work most times so I have to bomb out. The file size is only 29.5kb and yet another spreadsheet (created some time ago) of 243kb causes no problems. The only reference I can find to this problem is in PC World Hints June 1998 that suggested the removing any files in XLSTART directory (there are none) and check the alternate start-up file location field in ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Options’, ‘General’ tab (nothing there). Any ideas? (more…)

Word help not accessible
By skid on May 15, 2000 in Office | No Comments
I use Word6 in Office 4.2 under Windows 95B. Recently some of Word Help became inaccessible. The contents boxes appeared, but the hypertext links were dead. I uninstalled Word (including shared resources) using Office Setup and reinstalled it. Now Word Help will not work at all. Attempting to use Help Contents, Search or Index leads to the diagnostic “Winhlp32: An error has occurred in your program ….. Close or Ignore”. Closing leads to the diagnostic “Winhlp32: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down ….” with Details “Winhlp32 caused an invalid page fault in WHLP16T.DLL ….”. Can you please tell me why this has occurred and how I can fix it. (more…)

PowerPoint to HTML
By skid on May 1, 2000 in Office | No Comments
Last year I finished writing my family tree in the form of a book and distributed it to family members all over the world. This was very costly due to having to send new copies to all my family members when it was updated. My son and I have decided to put the family tree on the internet to save time and money. We used Microsoft PowerPoint to create the family tree. When we created it in PowerPoint all of the lines linking the tree together are of uniform thickness but when I pasted the tree into an HTML document for publishing on the internet the lines linking the tree together have gone strange (eg. some have gone thicker or thinner than others). Do you have a remedy for this problem? (more…)

Word could not fire event
By skid on April 24, 2000 in Office | No Comments
When I run Windows 98 and Word 7 at home there are a couple of annoying glitches. Often when I open a Word document, a dialogue box (with beep) comes up telling me that “Word could not fire event”. As if to contradict this message, when I click OK, the file is opens without problem. How can I prevent the dialogue box and beep ever appearing again please? Another problem is that, for some mysterious reason, I have to insert a space (or extra space) if I want an apostrophe or quotation marks to appear when a word or phrase begins or ends with a letter in lower case. It can be a real pain having to remember this or later having to add the punctuation or spaces. Again, could you please advise me how to rectify that problem? (more…)

Office 2000 toolbar not loading
By skid on December 27, 1999 in Office | No Comments
My problem is that on loading Office 2000 the toolbar just refuses to load. Have tried a complete uninstall and adding a toolbar that is in the menu. This refuses to allow me to use the correct toolbar and in anycase, if I make one up, it disappears on restart. Probably some small entry in the registry but cannot find it. (more…)
