I am having trouble using a function of my Excel 97 Spreadsheet. I would like to calculate projected earnings on an investment, using a compound interest formula. I have found such a formula in Excel 97. But when I try it out, it does not produce any result. The accrued interest (in the 1900 date system) is: ‘ACCRINT(”2/28/93″,”8/31/93″,”5/1/93″,0.1,1000,2,0) equals 16.94444.’ When I copy this into a spreadsheet cell, I do not get an answer. The spreadsheet simply returns a cell full of hashes. I have tried various permutations of the dates, with and without inverted commas, and in American and Australian date order. I wonder if you can help with this problem.

If I now create a new document (in Word 97 under Win 95) the first line of text is showing at 2cm on the page. When I go into print preview it is showing at 15.3cm and this is where it actually prints. This glitch is affecting all my existing documents when I print (whether Word 7 or Lotus Wordpro). Sometimes switching to A4 Transverse instead of A4 fixes the problem but not always and I cannot see any difference between A4 and A4 Transverse. Could I have inadvertently altered a setting somewhere? I have not been able to find it, as all the settings in Print and Page Setup seem OK. (more…)

Word 97 has a “Save as HTML” option in the File menu. I often need to save documents in RTF. Is there some way of setting up a “Save as RTF” option in the File menu thus avoiding the need to go to “Save As” and then choose RTF off the drop box? (more…)

As an old silver-top heavily into word processing at home, all is well with my Windows 95 and Word 97 packages except that for some documents (produced on earlier software versions). Word can’t find either its Thesaurus file or its Dictionary file. It never seems to lose both at the same time. I fixed the Dictionary problem in each document individually by: Edit (Select all) Tools (Language) Mark selected text as English (UK) OK but I can’t discover any way to connect the errant Thesaurus. I saw on the internet that Microsoft has released Office 2000 but it is not available in stores yet, you can only order over the internet. Is this true and if it is why is it so cheap to buy ($50-70)? (more…)
