I wonder if you can help me with a problem that has just started happening in Word97. I am trying to print customised labels within Word97/Windows95 and am not able to adjust the sizes correctly anymore. Having customised the label size and added the data I require, I then go into ‘Print Preview’ before printing. Everything looks fine there, and the margins are correct etc. However, when I print the label, the top margin is around 1cm shorter than the margin settings. I have resorted to trying to fudge the margins in desperation. However, this leads to a lot of hit and miss (more miss than hits!). I have since printed the labels on another PC with Word97/Windows NT and had no problems. I’m also having problems with my footers in some documents as well. The problem here is that the footer is getting cropped at the top of the text! It appears in the preview
window, however, it won’t print all the text. (more…)

I would appreciate your help with my frustrating problem. I run Windows 95 with Word 97 on a Fairstar computer. I have for some time kept a folder with a number of files detailing my financial affairs - tax, investments etc. Until recently this worked without a hitch but now when I bring the files up the screen is disordered, the columns are not columnar and the font is not correct. However when I go to Print Preview all is as it should be. I would like to avoid retyping the lot in the proper form and so would be glad if you tell me what I did wrong to cause this trouble ane advise of corrective action. (more…)

A strange problem has developed with my Word program. It is not life threatening only most annoying. To insert double quotation marks (”) you press shift plus (’). This used to work but a few weeks ago it ceased to work correctly and changed to a thick vertical line. Can you suggest why this has happened and what can be done to put it right short of re-installing the whole program? It prints as the screen shows ie. it is not a display problem. Also my other programs like Eudora and Works do not show this fault so it is clearly in the Word program. I recall that earlier versions of Word gave some options as to how quotation marks were displayed but I can find no options in Word 97 nor can I find any symbol like the one that appears anywhere else. I need your help for the following reason. When executing Access, usually my requests for online help (either by pressing or by means of the paper clip Office Assistant), end up with what follows: either garbled - or missing - text, and/or a message telling me that the help program has performed an illegal operation. I am using Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2 and have 30MB of RAM and 160MB of free hard disk space. I execute Access in isolation (ie. with no other applications, to my knowledge, open). I have been told that the cause of the problem is having ‘not enough memory’. Nevertheless, on the box of Microsoft Office 97 it is stated that ‘To use Microsoft Office Professional you need 8MB of memory to run Microsoft Access and 40 - 128MB of hard disk space (depending on your setup preferences) to install the application. Could you please instruct me on how to correct this problem and also tell me what is causing it? Thanks. (more…)
