  • Word documents open in Excel

    Double-clicking to open any Word document produces two windows. The first window attempts to open the Word document using Excel, with a message that the file is not valid (obviously because the file is a Word document rather than Excel spreadsheet). Closing the Excel window reveals the second window, which correctly opens the document using Microsoft Word. Running the Check Disk utility has not resolved the problem. This is not a critical problem, as I can still open the documents, but is still an inconvenience. How can I stop the document from incorrectly opening in Excel, and just opening in Word? (more…)

  • Computer restarts when printing Visio document

    My computer restarts whenever printing a Word document that contains a Visio drawing to a network HP LaserJet 4250 printer, and this same problem occurs with all other computers on the network as well. If I remove the drawing the document prints without problem, and the document also prints on a different printer without any issues. The computers are running Windows XP SP2. (more…)

  • Word and Outlook freeze computer

    When typing in Microsoft Word or Outlook the programs freeze for approximately 60 seconds then “thaws” and continues to operate normally. Running Detect and Repair in Word and Outlook does not fix the problem. The computer is running Windows XP with Office 2002. (more…)

  • Minus sign turns to a plus sign

    When using Word or Excel and I type the minus symbol, the symbol turns to a plus sign as soon as another character is typed. The only time this doesn’t change is when using cell references in Excel instead of text. Using a different keyboard does not fix the problem, nor does reinstalling Microsoft Office.
