  • 205 - Cache Memory error

    I have an aging (circa 1996) Compaq ProSignia with an Intel Overdrive chip running Windows 95. When started, the computer returns the error message ‘205 - Cache Memory error’, preceded by a string of digits that seems to vary with each start-up. After a brief delay, the message ‘Press F1 to continue’ appears. Pressing F1 allows the computer to continue the start-up and run normally, albeit very, very slowly. I ran two diagnostics programs. WHATCPU tells me that my CPU is an Intel Overdrive PODP 5V chip, rated at 90MHz. However, BCM Diagnostics tells me that it is actually running at 17 - 24 MHz. Your advice on the nature of the problem (and possible solutions) would be much appreciated. (more…)

  • PC and Mac RAM

    I operate a Mac Power PC 7200 and I wish to increase the RAM with either a 32MB or a 64MB chip. There is a great discrepancy in price between RAM for a Mac and RAM for a PC. Do you know why this is so and can you advise whether RAM is RAM and indeed interchangeable. I have found some material which suggests that this might be so but the Mac people said that Apple RAM is quite specific. This Mac requires 168 pin DIMM with a minimum RAM speed of 70 ns. (more…)
