Game freezes and sound shutters
By skid on June 12, 2000 in Sound | No Comments
I have a Celeron 500, Gigabyte motherboard, 64MB RAM, Acer 10X DVD-ROM drive, 13GB Seagate hard drive, Creative Vibra 128 PCI sound card and a Powercolor Sniper2 nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64 video card with 32MB video RAM and TV-out. Everything is new. Whenever I start up my FIFA 2000 CD-ROM soccer game, it loads OK but after a few seconds of game play it freezes, the sound “stutters” on the same note or syllable and the whole computer locks up. Alt-tab does not work and only the reset button regains control of the computer. I’ve tried everything: reinstalling the game, loading the latest Direct-X 7a drivers, even reinstalling Windows 98 (1st edition). Another slower CD-ROM drive gave the same result. I can’t find any reference to the problem on the Electronic Arts website or the Creative website. The only clue is that the game was stable when I tried using my old ESS 1868 ISA sound card. The sound was buzzy but at least the game ran. But after removing that sound card from Control Panel and then reinstalling the Creative card and game, the problem returned. Should I do another clean install of Windows? It is getting very tedious; it seems like a driver/sound card conflict to me. Can you suggest anything? (more…)

Windat and Mixer
By skid on February 7, 2000 in Sound | No Comments
I have a Pentium 133Mhz with Windows 95 that I have bought in 1995 (IBM Aptiva). At first the modem went and didn’t work, then the soundcard wasn’t working. One error message I get is ‘Windat: Corrupt file - cannot open’ and the other message is ‘Mixer: Mixer Device configuration problem. The mixer functions are disabled. Now it doesn’t work at all! I used the Product Recovery CD-ROM but the message comes up ‘Windows 95 Setup: This program is not correctly configured. Please contact your dealer. The program will now close’. Any suggestions? Volume control muted
By skid on September 20, 1999 in Sound | No Comments
I have IBM Voice Type Simply Speaking Gold Ver. 3.5 and Crystal Semiconductor Sound Software. I had the volume indicator in the system tray looking normal then I went into Voice Type and it turned to mute and when I tried to un-mute it and it just turned back to mute. The sound still works but I can’t control the volume using the system tray volume control. How can I rectify this problem (I tried reinstalling The Crystal software but when I went back to Voice Type it went back to mute)? (more…)

Detecting sound card
By skid on May 31, 1999 in Sound | No Comments
I have just had a new hard drive installed on my 486 DX66 and reinstalled Win 95. The boot fails to pick up my sound card. I have reinstalled the software that came with the sound card but still no joy. I go to “install new hardware” in settings and install the sound card and the sound works perfectly. However when I turn the machine off and on again the sound cards again lost. Any ideas? (more…)
