A recent Tip of the Week mentioned the Google Earth program. I investigated the program, and it appears my setup does not meet the minimum specifications for running Google Earth. I do not have a broadband internet connection (I still only have dial-up), or the required 3D graphics card. Is it possible to install Google Earth on my computer? The computer is running Windows XP. When attempting to open picture files (which are not in JPEG format) an alert appears with the message ‘Error Starting Program. A required .DLL file CRLCTL80.DLL was not found’. As far as I can see, this appears to be a problem with the CorelDraw program. The computer is running Windows 98 SE. (more…)

After Linux was installed on my home computer, when looking through the file system, I located the /root directory. I found the name ‘root’ a bit boring, so I changed the name of the directory to ‘Harry’s docs’. Now whenever I log onto Linux a message appears saying: ‘Your home directory is listed as: /root but does not appear to exist’. The computer is running a dual-boot setup with Windows XP and RedHat Linux. (more…)

Your recent Tip of the Week about using the Print Screen key to take screen captures was very interesting. I have been attempting to use this method to take screen captures in an old DOS GIS program (Idrisi). The program runs through a full-screen DOS ‘box’ in Windows XP. Pressing the PrtScn key then using ALT-ENTER (to restore to the Windows desktop) I open Paint and attempt to paste. However, nothing is pasted! I have tried using various other combinations of keys such as Shift- Print Screen, but to no avail. Is there a way to take screen captures of this program, other than spending many $100s on purchasing a Windows version of the software? (more…)
