Although my new flat screen monitor (Acer LCD) is very nice, all the colours are out of whack. For example: red is black, and blue and green strange variations of their former selves. The manual directs me to use the OSD (on-screen display) menu to alter the red/green/blue (RGB) balance but I am unable to select and modify the settings. A second (unrelated) problem is MSN Explorer will not load and I can also not access any password protected websites using Internet Explorer. Scanning the computer for spyware using SpywareBlaster and Spybot Search & Destroy does not find any items of concern. Interestingly enough, Mozilla does not have any of these problems. The computer is running Windows XP Professional. (more…)

An old computer acquired from a friend will only display 16 colours and will not allow any higher colour depth to be selected. The Device Manager says the graphics card is a Standard PCI Adapter. Do I need drivers for the card and, if so, where can I get these drivers? The computer is running Windows 98. (more…)

Whenever I try to boot my old computer running Windows Me, a message displays on the monitor ‘NO SIGNAL. 12 PRESET MODE MAX. 16 USER MODE’. As a result, I cannot use the computer. In the past I could press the Reset button and the monitor would work correctly, but lately this has not worked. The computer is also difficult to turn off, and I usually need to hold the on/off button for 5 seconds before the computer will power-down. Can you suggest how I can get the computer working, as I need to transfer data from this computer to my new computer. (more…)

My 2-year-old son likes typing on the computer and has pressed something which has turned the computer settings to permanently 16 colours at 640 x 480. Whenever I reset the colour and resolution to their original values Windows must be restarted, but the settings do not hold. The computer is an older Dell running Windows 2000. (more…)

Since upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP, I am having problems starting ‘Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast’. When starting the game, the following message appears on top of the console ‘GLW_Start OpenGL - Could not load OpenGL subsystem’. The computer stops loading the game, and I am unable to play. (more…)
