Unable to switch to video mode 640 x 480
By skid on September 17, 2001 in Video/Graphics | No Comments
Recently I bought an interactive horse-riding game called ‘Riding Star’ for my daughter. Installation proceeded smoothly but when trying to play the game the following error message appears: ‘Unable to switch to video mode 640 x 480′. Our computer is a Compaq Presario 524CDS, 486 DX4 100 MHz, 4.3gb hard drive and 24mb RAM running Windows 95b. The video adapter chip is Cirrus Logic CL-GD-5424 that has its own driver. Attempts to run the game using a different driver (e.g, Generic VGA) have not been successful, neither has manually changing the screen resolution to 680 x 480. I have not been able to find any updated Windows 95 drivers for this model Cirrus Logic chip. I think I have diagnosed the problem correctly as being with the video adapter not switching to the desired screen resolution. If you have any ideas or fixes for the problem we would be very grateful. (more…)

Resolution slider grayed out

In one of your recent articles you helped someone whose computer could only manage to display 16 colours at 640 x 480 resolution when running Windows 98. I have the exact same problem but with Windows 95. Your solutions for Windows 98 did not work for me though. The resolution bar on the settings display is grayed out on 640 x 480 pixels. Can you help? (more…)

Stuck with 16 colours at 640 x 480
By skid on July 30, 2001 in Video/Graphics | No Comments
I recently reformatted the hard drive on my computer (PII 300) and after reloading Windows 98 and other software including the Diamond Monster II video accelerator driver I am stuck with 16 colours at 640 x 480 resolution. The system has loaded a Standard VGA display adapter which I can’t seem to change. I have loaded updated drivers for my monitor (Acer76c) and the Diamond Monster II card but it makes no difference. I had a look in ‘msconfig’ but the ‘VGA 640 x 480′ box was not ticked. The system worked perfectly before reformatting the hard drive. (more…)

I have a IBM 733 Pentium III running Windows ME and am having problems with my Voodoo 3 card. Whenever I try to change the colours to more than ‘256 Colours’ the computer locks up. Newer drivers, and emails to the card manufacturer have been fruitless. Is there anything you can do to help please? (more…)

We just bought a new 32 Mb 3D Graphic Accelerator card. When we try to run a program in GL mode, after one or so minutes it freezes. We run it on a Celeron 400, with 64 Meg of SDRAM and an 8 gig hard drive. Any suggestions? (more…)
