When shutting down the computer following a long session, an error message appears: ‘A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 017F:BFF9DFFF. The current application will be terminated’. The message then says press any key to continue or press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart the computer. However, these commands don’t always work and I often need to turn off the computer at the power point. The computer is running Windows 98. (more…)

I have been unable to install the last two released versions of ZoneAlarm on a fresh install of Windows 98 SE. During the installation, a message appears saying ‘Validation failed for C:WINDOWSTEMPVSINIT.DLL. You are probably missing a necessary root certificate’. (more…)

The problem relates to sorting and arranging my photo collection. My computer is running Windows Me and I use Ulead Photo Explorer to edit my photos. After editing the photos each photo is given a number and the photos are exported to a file in My Pictures. When opening the My Pictures directory to list the files, the entries are not listed in any order and the files can only be arranged by size, date, name or type - not by number. However, when opening the photos through Ulead Photo Explorer they are displayed in numerical order as required. However, I would like to copy the files to CD so they can be displayed on another computer with the photos in numerical order. My conclusion is Windows Me does not have the sorting capability by number, but may be I have missed something. None of the other sorting criteria are of any use, because sizes will change during editing, dates are not always relevant, and neither is type or name. (more…)

When Windows starts the following message appears: ‘Backweb Warning: Item Trigger tried to perform an action not authorised by the channel’s security settings and has been stopped’. Clicking OK causes the message to disappear, and the computer operates normally. I have run scans using both Ad-Aware and AVG and both report clean results, yet the error message still appears on startup. The computer is running Windows Me. (more…)

Windows Me with Internet Explorer 6 refuses to display the Help and Support home page. I go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Help’ and an Internet Explorer window appears with the message ‘This page cannot be displayed’. The Internet Explorer address bar shows ‘C:WINDOWSHTMLHELP.HTM’. Re-visiting this URL displays a security warning that the certificate has expired, and offers the option to run ‘Windows Local Help’. Acceptance of this message causes the Help and Support home page to appear, and from then on things work normally. However, this long-winded procedure is quite frustrating just to display Help and Support! How can I restore the proper operation? (more…)
