Random reboots
By skid on April 12, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I have a 233mhz Cyrix processor system (6×86/MX300) on a Tekram VIA P3 motherboard, (96mb RAM). When I recently upgraded from Windows 95 to 98 it started to intermittently reboot itself randomly there is no pattern to particular software running at the time it happens. I went back to a clean, fresh install of Windows 95 and the problem disappeared for about 6 weeks but has begun to reoccur intermittently. The system will reboot without me doing anything - I have seen it do it while I’ve watched and nothing is running apart from windows. Do you think this is hardware or software related and what action would you suggest? Before upgrading to Windows 98 I had used this machine for about 4 months without problems. (more…)

For some weeks now when using Windows 95 & MS Word 97 I am having a window pop up stating: ‘Registry Problem. Windows encountered an error in the system registry. Please close your programs and restart Windows now. You may lose some of the information from the current session. Restarting will allow the registry to reinitialize.” I follow the instructions and sure enough in no time fast… I have the same problem and down pops the window again. Needless to say this is very frustrating. Can please help me? (more…)

This application has violated system integrity due to execution of an invalid instruction and will be terminated. Quit applications, quit windows and then restart Windows and your computer’ I cannot open a lot of files including all help files. Can you please help? I am running Windows 3.1. (more…)

Windows boot menu
By skid on March 15, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
For some unexplained reason I now get the Windows 98 startup screen requesting that I choose one of the following options: Normal, Safe Mode, Command Prompt, Safe Mode Prompt Only. If I don’t choose any of the above within 28 seconds it will then take me into Windows 98 where I want to go but before it used to go straight in without the prompt screen and the 28 seconds. Do you know why this has suddenly happened every time I turn on my computer? (more…)

File Manager
By skid on March 15, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
When my friend opens File Manager in Win 3.1, the top of the window is above the top of the screen on the monitor such that the Title and Menu bars are inaccessible. He cannot “grab” the top border of the window to pull it down. Stretching the window out at the other borders to make it bigger makes the problem worse. In its current state the File Manager is nearly useless. Can you help? (more…)
