While initializing device IOS Windows protection error
By skid on November 8, 2004 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I would like to dual boot with Windows 95 (OSR 2) and Windows 2000. For this purpose, I created a 2GB FAT32 partition for Windows 95, a 5GB NTFS partition for Windows 2000, plus a few other non-system partitions in NTFS and FAT32. Windows 95 installed on the 2GB partition, but when trying to boot Windows 95 the splash screen appears, followed by a message stating ‘While initializing device IOS Windows protection error. You must restart your computer’. How can I fix this error? (more…)

Setup detects unsupported OS, and USB not recognised
By skid on November 1, 2004 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
Recently I purchased a Canon MP 370 multifunction printer. When installing the printer drivers and software, via the CD provided, on my Hewlett Packard Pentium II computer running Windows 98, everything installed except the ScanSoft Omnipage SE software. A message appeared saying ‘Setup detects unsupported OS’. The printer wizard allowed me to setup the printer and an icon appears on the desktop, but the printer does not respond to the print command. Although the new printer is plugged into a USB port, the device manager shows the printer is connected to LPT1, not USB. I could not locate any reference in the system to a USB port. I downloaded into desktop a USB 2.0 file from the Hewlett Packard site believing the port may be unsupported by software but when I attempt to capture the port, the system requests a path name of which I am unsure. The device manager also still shows no reference to a USB port. How can I make the printer work? (more…)

After installing ZoneAlarm I immediately encountered problems when connecting to the internet. The connection dialogue stops at the ‘Verifying Username and Password’ prompt, and does not connect. Disabling ZoneAlarm fixes the problem. How can I connect to the internet while having the protection of ZoneAlarm? The computer is running Windows 98. (more…)

vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd and dfs.vxd
By skid on October 11, 2004 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
After installing an ADSL connection, the following message appears on startup: ‘vnetsup.vxd. Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists.’. Clicking OK causes the same error message to appear, referring to the files vredir.vxd and dfs.vxd. The computer will then start up and operate normally. Having read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 166832, I am unsure whether the files are from the Windows or ADSL installation. The computer is running Windows 98. (more…)
