Cannot play games over internet
By skid on August 6, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Games | No Comments
Recently I installed Windows 2000 Professional on my computer in dual-boot mode with Windows 98 SE. Counter-Strike, Half-Life and Tribes 2 all worked well under this system (I was playing games under Windows 98 SE) until I tried to use Win 2K to connect to the internet. At this point my modem settings and drivers changed from the NetComm 56K Internal (Inmodem 5692) to a Win Modem. I changed the drivers
back to the InModem 5692 drivers and then tried to play Counter-Strike and Tribes 2. They work fine in LAN play mode, but when I try to connect to the World Opponent Network Counter-Strike freezes on me and Tribes 2 says that it cannot connect to any WON servers. My modem surfs the net correctly, so I don’t think there is a problem there. What I do think is that when Windows 2000 changed the settings this also changed the settings in Windows 98 and either damaged the modem, or changed a port setting somewhere. I have tried re-installing Counter-Strike and Tribes 2, but to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated. (more…) -
Stuck with 16 colours at 640 x 480
By skid on July 30, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Video/Graphics | No Comments
I recently reformatted the hard drive on my computer (PII 300) and after reloading Windows 98 and other software including the Diamond Monster II video accelerator driver I am stuck with 16 colours at 640 x 480 resolution. The system has loaded a Standard VGA display adapter which I can’t seem to change. I have loaded updated drivers for my monitor (Acer76c) and the Diamond Monster II card but it makes no difference. I had a look in ‘msconfig’ but the ‘VGA 640 x 480′ box was not ticked. The system worked perfectly before reformatting the hard drive. (more…)

Random freezes
By skid on July 30, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
My computer has a tendency to freeze up and stays that way. It will not allow me to open or close any programs or even to shut down the computer. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason. Sometimes it happens while surfing the net, other times while doing things on the desktop. I have Windows 98. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (more…)

Overclocking CPU
By skid on July 30, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in General | No Comments
I am wondering about over-clocking my CPU. It is a PIII 450 MHz with Gigabyte GA-6BA motherboard. The case has little or no ventilation and I am wondering whether I can over-clock the CPU without it breaking down and whether the CPU should be fitted with extra cooling. Also, how much can I over-clock? My friend has the same chip and has over-clocked to 568 MHz with a bus speed of 122 MHz (he thinks). His case has more ventilation than mine and has run his PC that way for a couple of years without extra cooling for the CPU. Can I do the same to mine? (more…)

winmail.dat
By skid on July 23, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
I use Windows 98 and Explorer 5.5. All emails I send out are in Rich Text Format from Outlook 2000. I am able to send attachments to my work email address which is on the same system and is also set up for Rich Text Format. My problem occurs when I send attachments to other addresses. The email arrives but the attachment doesn’t. Instead, the file ‘winmail.dat’ is attached to the email. I have also found that when I send emails from work to home they are sent in Rich Text format but arrive in Plain Text even though my home address is set up for Rich Text. Any ideas? Is it something to do with the server that somehow changes the format or is there some other cause for this, possibly within outlook itself? Please help if you can. (more…)
