When I finish checking my email in Outlook Express I go to the bottom right hand corner of my screen and click onto the icon of two little computers there to log off. A box then comes up on the screen where I click a button to log off. However, the line marked ‘Bytes Received’ is ticking away into the millions and the line marked ‘Bytes Sent’ is still ticking away into the hundreds of thousands! This occurs even when I don’t have any other applications open and I am just looking at my e-mail. Where are all these bytes going and how can I stop it? What have I done wrong! I am using Windows 98. (more…)

For quite sometime under Windows 98 and now Windows ME, I have had a problem with Internet explorer where at times I get a message that Explorer has caused a invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL and will shutdown. For about 8 months I have been unable to internet bank because of this problem as it happens every time I try to load up my bank’s secure site. Interestingly, when I installed Windows ME, a fault (which did not prevent installation) in RegSvr32 caused problems with KERNEL32.DLL. What on earth is this and how can it be fixed? (more…)

  • Error: Could not install service vectors

There are two problems with my PC which may be related. I am running Windows 98 SE on a Pentium III 550MHz with a 20Gb hard disk, 128Mb of RAM, and a SoundBlaster Live! Value sound card. The hard disk is partitioned into C, D and E drives with the C drive containing the operating system. The first problem is the message ‘Error: Could not install service vectors, press any key to continue’ appears on shutdown. The next message after pressing any key is ‘It is now safe to turn off the computer’ after which it automatically powers off. The second problem relates to defragmenting. Disk Defragment works fine on the D and E drives but sometimes doesn’t work on the C drive. Defragmenting of the C drive appears to work ok except sometimes when I apply the defragment a second time immediately after the first because the drive picture appears to be unchanged from the picture before the initial defragment. I would appreciate your help. (more…)

I run Windows 95 on an IBM Aptiva LQ6. Since loading Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 2001, when I boot up a message titled ‘Regsvr32′ appears saying ‘No DLL name specified’. Beneath that it goes on ‘Usage Regsvr32 (u)(s)(n)(i) (cmdlime) dll name /u unregsvr; /s silent display no message boxes; /c console output…’ I click ok and the PC loads with no problems. Why does this window appear and what does it mean? Secondly, I had several folders in my HP PaperPort application with documents filed in them which have disappeared leaving only the Main Folder. These folders and their contents can be accessed in Windows Explorer. However, when I attempt to copy the folder to the PaperPort folder in Explorer, the original folder instead duplicates itself and refuses to copy itself to PaperPort. How can restore the folder to the PaperPort application ? (more…)

I am using Windows 98 on a Pentium III. When I run Adobe Photoshop, the message ‘Cannot find Photoshop interface fonts and the Photoshop UI Font’ appears. I uninstalled Photoshop and installed it on my other computer, also running Windows 98, and the problem was not replicated. I reinstalled Windows 98 on the computer in question but it did not fix the problem. How can I fix this problem? (more…)
