I recently bought a DOS based game (Privateer2) and am having trouble running it on my computer which has Win 95 installed. I created a Startup disk using AddRemove Programs on the Control Panel, but it didn’t have an Autoexec.Bat and only 1 line on the Config.Sys (DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS) I created an Autoexec.Bat from Privateer but when I reboot to DOS I cannot access the CD-Rom which is on E. I have 2 questions - why can’t I access the E: drive and is there an easy way using Win 95 to include all the lines for the CD-ROM, soundcard and mouse on the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys? Thanks. On the front page of Canberra Times Sunday Times the main heading was “Australia Y2K bug-free” but column 7 said there was a little bug. The ABC TV said that someone had found a minor clock problem and I had the same experience. I was advised by Microsoft to change my clock to 4-digit year display and there would be no problems. I did so on my 2 computers which use Windows 3.1 and 95. On both clocks, the date on New Year’s Day was 4-1-1980 which I changed to 1-1-2000. I have so far found no other problems. So I would be grateful to you if you could explain something about the clock program and what happened to my computer. (more…)

  • IRQ conflicts

My computer frequently completely freezes up. It has been doing this for some time and I cannot detect any pattern in the circumstances of the freezing. Last night it froze whilst downloading a file from a website. In an attempt to cure that problem I installed a new hard disk and reloaded essentially the same programs. The problem remained so I assume that it arises from the software or the BIOS. I have Celeron 266, 64mb RAM. I have modem, a video capture card and a sound card. IRQ conflicts are:
IRQ 11 Buster II (A video capture program)
IRQ II Intel82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ II IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
    IRQ 12 Trident 9440 PCI
IRQ 12 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
I hope that is enough information to give you a clue as to the source of the problem. Thank you for any assistance that you may be able to give to me. I assure you that I will be most grateful. (more…)

  • Verifying username & password and CD problems

I have IPEX DX2/66 & converted from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. It all works OK except:
    (a) When I setup Internet Explorer to use PCUG things go as normal until the message comes up saying ‘Verifying user name and password’. It sits there for quite some time before giving this message ‘The Microsoft Dial Up Adapter is not configured to work with the current network configuration. Check your server type and the network configuration in the Control Panel then try again.’ I don’t have a server or network? Any suggestions please.
    (b) I have an old two speed CD (Creative) which under Windows 3.1 you can put a variable /N:1 in config.sys (you could daisy chain up to 4). Windows 95 automatically found it and loaded it OK except that I now have 4 CD’S in Device Manager (D,E,F,G).I delete three of them and all is well until next time I log on & they are back again. I deleted them according to the manual instructions but obviously when Windows finds it next time it is resetting N:4 somehow and somewhere? I’ve looked in ‘Win.ini’ but its not there? Any suggestions - otherwise it appears to work great. (more…)
