56k speed not achieved
By skid on January 24, 2000 @ 9:00 AM in Modem | No Comments
My ISP is OzEmail. I run windows 98, I have a Netcomm Roadster II 56k SVD and I live in Nicholls. Although I have a 56k modem, according to the Windows dialog box in the bottom of the page I only connect at 28000bps. I am into gaming such as Quake and Halflife and my ping times are 270+. Recently my friend used my modem and ISP account in Spence on his computer, he connected at 56000bps and his ping times were in the low 200’s. What is going on? Why am I connecting at 28000bps and have consistently higher ping times. I have installed all the latest drivers, used different initialisation strings, ensured my modem connect at 56k speed but to no avail. Can you help me? Would different suburbs have such a dramatic effect on ping times? (more…)

Sometimes when I turn on my computer the screen area settings have changed without me doing anything. They go from 1024X768 to 640X480 pixels. Do you know why? I’m running Windows 98 SE. (more…)

No Windows splash screen

Can you please help me with a fix to a problem with my Compaq and/or its OEM Win95A? On startup all I get are “COMPAQ” banner screens and then straight into the desktop with no “Windows Starting” or banner screen. This makes it difficult to press F8 or DEL (or any other key) at the appropriate stage of startup. When I asked Compaq Support for a solution I was offered a fix to be downloaded at a cost of $25! Internet problems
By skid on January 24, 2000 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
We are having some problems with the internet and I was wondering if this had anything to do with our server (being a proxy server). The problems are:
a. Whenever we try to download something, the download program we have tells us that the host (the one we try to download from) is not responding.
b. When we try to log onto the MSN Gaming Zone it gives a message: “Failed to establish server connection”.
c. The ICQ and mIRC chat programs won’t register somehow (even though we put in the correct information).
d. Every 1 out of 4 web pages take 15 min to load.
We are running a Celeron 400 with IE5. Maybe you could shed some light on these problems because we are wasting a lot of internet time trying to find the solution to the them. (more…) -
Standard VGA monitor
By skid on January 24, 2000 @ 9:00 AM in Video/Graphics | No Comments
I recently upgraded to Windows 98 and I’m having a rather annoying problem. Somehow my machine seems to think I have a standard VGA monitor with only 16 colours. I have gone through the display settings and tried to change the colour palette but I have a choice of only 2 or 16 colours. I suspect that I will need to reinstall the display driver but since the machine came with everything on board I am not sure what sort of driver I am looking for. The monitor is a 17″ OSB but the user instructions give no clue to what sort of driver to use. My driver and utility disk mentions 2 drivers FYI Trident 9750 AGP/VGA and FYI Trident 9850 AGP/VGA that sound likely candidates - but I have no way of knowing which would be suitable. Any suggestions would be most welcome. (more…)
