Disable ‘Auto-select’ encoding
By skid on June 25, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
I wrote last year when I was not able to print from Internet Explorer and Outlook Express after upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5. You replied with a suggestion to disable ‘Auto-select’ encoding. Unfortunately, this hasn’t done the trick so I’m still stuck with a problem of not being able to print. I would appreciate it if you could advise of any other options that I could try. (more…)

Changing colour depth doesn’t work
By skid on June 18, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I have a Pentium II with Windows 98. Recently Windows no longer displays in 256 colours and has reverted to 16 colours mode. I cannot get any good images and my kids can’t play most of the games. When I change the setting in the ‘Display’ control panel from ‘16 Colours’ to ‘256 Colours’ a message appears prompting me to reboot the machine. However, after the system reboots it is still in 16 colour mode. I’ve checked the connection of the video card and it is not loose. The adapter driver installed is ‘RAGE IIc AGP (English)’ and the monitor driver is ‘HP D5258A Pavilion M50 Monitor’. Is there anyway to fix the problem? (more…)

RTF displayed as squares and oblongs
By skid on June 11, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Office | No Comments
When I receive e-mails with attachments I have no problems if they are sent in Word 6 (.DOC) format. However, if they are sent in RTF or any other format the attachment is displayed in the form of a series of squares and oblongs! Is there any way to fix this as I can’t always ask the sender to resend the attachment in Word 6 format? My computer is a HP Pavilion running Windows 95 with Outlook Express 5. (more…)

There was an error writing to USBPRN01 for the printer
By skid on June 11, 2001 @ 9:00 AM in Printer | No Comments
A few months ago I bought a USB Canon BJC 3000 printer. Everything worked fine for a few weeks, until it refused to print, giving the message ‘There was an error writing to USBPRN01 for the printer. Cannot access the port. It may be in use by another program. Quit other programs and try again’. On investigation I found that the printer was no longer registered through the Device Manager USB Controllers (in the ‘System’ control panel). I reinstalled the printer software and it then printed without any problems. However, the same problem reoccurs every 3 - 4 weeks. It is easy to fix, but a pain in the neck. The USB connection appears steady enough at both the printer and PC ends. I am running Windows 98. Do you have any explanation/cure? (more…)
