Downloading sounds
By skid on May 3, 1999 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
I have ICQ and the latest they have out is Jukebox with extra sounds you can download for upcoming birthdays and things to remember. I go to download and a Windows box comes up saying to download this you need Windows Media Player. Then it prompts to download and then a message comes up as error and says ‘The security setting for your current zone may be set too high. Does not allow ActiveX to function properly to restart installation on demand. Change the security to medium by going through the tool bar and internet options then close Internet Explorer and press the browser refresh button’. I checked the zone and it is on medium already. Can you help? (more…)

Visual C++ problems
By skid on May 3, 1999 @ 9:00 AM in Specialised software | No Comments
I have VC++ 5.0 and VC++ 6.0 installed on my computer. I re-installed Windows 95 as the system was sluggish and unstable and this required me to re-install both items of software. Once done however, both caused problems: VC++ 5.0 said when installing that a required *.dll file, IVAUTO.dll was not loaded correctly and when running the program I get that the file ‘deviv.pkg’ was not able to be loaded, and a message to re-install the program. However, both these two files are on the system and installed. VC++ 6.0 requires DCOM and IE4 to work. Whilst DCOM is installed properly, when trying to install IE4 off the CD, it gives the error that the proxy server was down, I should try connecting again later. It need not install files from the internet however, as all those required are on the CD. What should I do? (more…)

Thesaurus and Dictionary
By skid on April 26, 1999 @ 9:00 AM in Office | No Comments
As an old silver-top heavily into word processing at home, all is well with my Windows 95 and Word 97 packages except that for some documents (produced on earlier software versions). Word can’t find either its Thesaurus file or its Dictionary file. It never seems to lose both at the same time. I fixed the Dictionary problem in each document individually by: Edit (Select all) Tools (Language) Mark selected text as English (UK) OK but I can’t discover any way to connect the errant Thesaurus.
