There are a couple of concerns I have in using the spellchecker in Word. Firstly, I have found that, both in Word 97 and Word 2000 the Australian spelling is very close to US spelling. I have set all my templates and ‘normal.dot’ to UK spelling which I think is the closest to Australian spelling. Despite this, US spelling continues to crop up from time to time. How can I eliminate the US spelling dictionary for once and for all so that my Word program never has recourse to it. How can I do the same thing for Eudora? (more…)

I have Windows 98 Second Edition. When I move, copy, rename, etc… a file in Windows Explorer it does not show changes to a directory immediately, instead I have to use F5 to refresh the screen (even if the change is done on the explorer screen itself). For example, I rename a file and as soon as I move the cursor away the display reverts to the old file name until I refresh the screen. I could not find any option anywhere that sets this behaviour. Any suggestions? (more…)

How do I permanently get rid of the Contents Advisor dialogue box that pops up on my screen from time to time? I run Windows 95 and our PC is only used by two of us. Neither has requested any form of net censorship but this dialogue box seems to have a life of its own, appearing sometimes before accessing Hotmail, sometimes between
changing web pages and sometimes not at all. I am presented with three options and asked for a password. Usually just clicking the ‘Always view this page’ option followed by ‘Ok’ removes the Contents Advisor and I continue typing or browsing but it happens again next time. When I phoned my ISP he started talking about re-formatting my PC and other complicated, expensive options but surely there’s an easier way to get rid of something I never asked for in the first place. Could I have inadvertently clicked on some security setting? (more…)

I use a shared PC running Internet Explorer 5. For privacy I always delete my history folder when I quit. However, I’ve just found out that the ‘View’ and ‘Search’ function underneath the ‘History’ bar does not seem to be deleted. ‘Sites visited today’ does not respond to the delete command. Is there a way to disable this aspect of the History function or to delete all content? (more…)

I am having problems connecting to the Canberra Times Archives section. Every time I have entered a search word in the Archives section the computer has frozen as I have attempted to scroll down to the second entry. I am able to access the first entry but unable to scroll down to the second entry without the computer freezing. I have not had this problem on the Internet before. Once the computer freezes I have to reboot with the on/off switch. I am using Windows 98 and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Thanks for your time. (more…)
