Cannot complete download
By skid on March 13, 2000 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
I am currently using a large internet service provider (ISP) and since moving to my current address I haven’t been able to complete a large download. Previously I experienced dropouts but not to the extent that I am now. This is extremely annoying and I am thinking of changing to another ISP. I originally chose my current provider on the basis that they would be able to provide me with a global roaming service but this is no longer a requirement. What questions should I ask in order to ascertain which ISP would perform best for me. (more…)

Import Outlook contacts
By skid on March 13, 2000 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
I purchased a new computer system just over a year ago. I run Windows 98 (2nd edition) and MS Office 97. At the time I did not connect to the Internet. I have used the Contacts folder in MS Outlook to record all names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc. though I did not set up a personal address book. A week or so ago I signed up for the Internet. I use IE5 and Outlook Express is my e-mail client. I thought I would be able to use the e-mail addresses stored in the Outlook Contacts folder (which is designated as an Outlook Address Book) but no. And I have not been able to find a way to import them into Outlook Express. Is there a way to import e-mail addresses from the Contacts folder into Outlook Express without first creating an Address Book in Outlook? (more…)

Hidden drives
By skid on March 6, 2000 @ 9:00 AM in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I have a small problem which I cannot find the answer to, and I wonder if you could possibly help me. I have a Pentium 233 Meg PC with a 3.2 Gig HDD partitioned into 2 X 1.6 Gigs, those being “C” and “D” Drives. The TX Mb has a No.1 and No.2 IDE outlets on the board. My problem started after receiving a RICOH 24×6x4 CD “Burner” for Xmas, which I installed into the PC on IDE1 as the “slave” to the HDD. All works well, and the “burner” was recognised as the “E” Drive by WIN98. I then connected my TEAC 24x CD to IDE2 as a “master” and after having set-up the BIOS, the PC now recognises both CD’s during Boot-up, but Windows 98 Explorer only shows “E”, “F” is missing. The Control Panel/System shows that there are 2 CD Drives and recognises their types as does Norton and Sandra. The DOS Prompt also allows me to access them both and to run programs (DOS Types only). I have also installed “F” as a “slave” to no avail. Can you please advise me how to get my “F” Drive to show in WIN Explorer. (more…)

I downloaded MSN Instant Messenger and Windows Media Player and installed these from Microsoft. Now whenever I try to open either of them I get the message that the path is incorrect and I’ m unable to go any further. One error message is ‘Cannot find program’ and another is, ‘This program is needed for opening files of type URL Hyper Text Transfer Protocol’. I am running a Pentium 100 with the Windows 98 upgrade. Any ideas? (more…)
