Social bookmarking services are becoming increasingly popular, allowing users to share bookmarks together with annotations and notes on particular websites. Two social bookmark services are Diigo (www.diigo.com) and Delicious (delicious.com). In addition to the sharing benefits of such services they also allow you to easily search through your saved content and are accessible from any computer with internet access, by simply logging onto the account for your social bookmarking service.

Internet Explorer Freezing
By skid on November 14, 2011 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
Recently I purchased a computer running Windows 7 64-bit and when using Internet Explorer 9 it intermittently freezes and does not allow me to go back, change tabs, or close tabs. The only way I can get rid of the non-responsive tabs is to restart the entire computer. Internet Explorer doesn’t display any messages when the problem occurs. Additionally, on occasion an error message appears saying “Security Error: Error #2000: No active security context”. However, the occurrence of this error does not correlate to the times that Internet Explorer freezes so I am unsure whether it’s related. (more…)

Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 3
By skid on November 7, 2011 @ 9:01 AM in Tip of the Week | No Comments
A few weeks ago Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Office 2007 was released. This update includes some minor new features and also various updates to the Microsoft Office system. It is always a good idea to keep Office up-to-date, given how often most people use this product, so the Service Pack can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27838 . More comprehensive information on Service Pack 3 can be found in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: support.microsoft.com/kb/2526086 .

Suitable Antivirus and Security Products

I have been using my current antivirus product for several years, and now that it has come up for renewal the cost has been advertised as US$100 rather than the US$70 which I have paid previously. Notwithstanding that I have had trouble with their support site and receiving replies, I also think that I am paying for more features than needed, such as parental controls and the backup/migration program which I have been encountering difficulty getting to work and support seems unable (or unwilling) to help! For years I have seen you recommend AVG, Spybot, Windows Defender, etc. and was wondering if I could safely just use Windows Defender and AVG on my Windows Vista computer. I only use the internet to visit known “trusted” sites such as Flickr, camera sites, Wikipedia, and internet banking. (more…)

Streaming TV Problem
By skid on November 7, 2011 @ 9:00 AM in Internet and email | No Comments
When visiting some Australian TV channel websites to catch-up on some TV viewing by watching the streaming version of shows, the following message appears: “You are unauthorised to watch this video as you are in the wrong location”. I am unsure what this means or how it can be fixed. The computer is running Windows XP. (more…)
