| Nero write error |

Whenever attempting to copy a CD using Nero 6 a “write error” occurs, and the copying process stops. I have attempted to locally cache the source CD to the hard drive, then copy to the destination CD, but this does not work. The Ricoh Dual Layer DVD burner was returned to Ricoh (to check whether the drive was faulty) and returned as fixed but with no comment as to the cause of the problem. However, the problem remains. I also cannot write CDs using Windows Media Player, but am able to write CDs using Real Player 10.5. I can also write DVDs fine, so only copying to CDs causes problems. The computer has an 80 GB HDD, 512 MB RAM running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. SK Note: The Nero log file has not been published due to space constraints. This is a tricky problem to solve since you are able to write CDs through RealPlayer but are unable to write using Nero or Windows Media Player. It appears the issue may be software related as opposed to hardware related. There are a few procedures you should try whenever experiencing errors writing to CDs. Firstly, try decreasing the write speed. From the log file you provided, it appears the computer is writing to the CD at 48x speed. Try reducing this speed to a setting such as 32x or 24x. You should be able to find this setting in the Nero configuration. Next, you should close any background applications which are running in case they are interrupting the CD burning process. Should the problem still continue, you should visit the Nero website (http://www.nero.com) to check whether any updates have been released for the software. While this seems like a standard suggestion, quite often updates for CD writing software are able to resolve several problems which occur. Once you arrive at the website, click the ‘Downloads’ link. The next page will display a link to updates for Nero 6. Then, on the following page in the left-hand column, click the version of Nero you are running to visit the downloads page for that version. If still no luck, you should next try using the in-built Windows XP CD recording facility. Firstly, make sure Windows CD writing is enabled on your CD drive. Open My Computer and right-click on your CD drive and select ‘Properties’. In the window that appears, click the ‘Recording’ tab. Make sure ‘Enable CD recording on this drive’ is selected. Click OK. Put a blank CD in the drive and double-click the CD drive to open. Drag and drop the files you wish to copy onto the CD. Then, click ‘Write these files to CD’ when you are ready to copy the files. Finally, you could try downloading the trial version of the latest version of Nero to see whether this works correctly. If this works, you may wish to consider upgrading to the latest version. Before installing the Trial version, make sure you uninstall Nero 6 to avoid any conflicts. |
