Slide scanners and portable printers PDF Print
Monday, 09 April 2007

For some reason I can no longer update Ad-Aware with the latest definition files. In an attempt to fix this problem I tried downloading the latest version of Ad-Aware from their website, but I could not find the free download link, only links for the paid versions. At the moment I am just running the old version on the computer with no updates. A second question relates to 2000 slides which I would like to scan and copy to DVD. One of my friends purchased a Canon Pixma MP800 that scans slides, but this is also a printer and a photocopier. I don’t really like multifunction products, as when one function breaks you lose the entire product until that function has been repaired. Are you aware of any dedicated slide scanners, and do you know anything about the resolution and quality of the scanned slide? Finally, I am looking for a small portable printer that I can use in the caravan when camping. Do such products exist?

USB printer from DOS PDF Print
Sunday, 23 July 2006

I have a Brother MFC215C printer connected through USB to my new Windows XP SP2 computer. When attempting to print from DOS programs (such as GWBASIC) nothing happens. I suspect DOS sends the print command to the LPT1 port as opposed to the USB port. So, how can I print to a USB printer from DOS?

Printing from last page to first page PDF Print
Sunday, 15 May 2005

My HP PSC 750 printer will always print from the last page to the first page, even when I select the box to print ‘Front to Back’. How do I make the printer start with the first page? Also, how can I download the ZoneAlarm firewall you have recommended in previous columns? The computer is running Windows XP.

Computer restarts when printing PDF Print
Sunday, 17 April 2005

Whenever printing a web page from Internet Explorer the computer restarts without notice. I have recently re-formatted my hard drive and completed a full virus and spyware/adware scan. This problem only exists when printing from Internet Explorer, and no other applications. My Printer is a Canon S200SPx, and the computer is running Windows XP with an ADSL internet connection.

Printer out of paper PDF Print
Sunday, 06 March 2005

When attempting to print to my Canon BJC-4310SP, occasionally an error message appears informing me there is an error writing to LPT1: the printer is out of paper. However, there is paper in the printer. Sometimes turning the printer off, then sending the print job, and pressing the power button again will fix the problem. However, other times this will not fix the issue and it will repeatedly occur. Reinstalling the printer driver has not fixed the problem. The computer is a Pentium II with 128 MB RAM running Windows 98.
