| Printer out of paper |

When attempting to print to my Canon BJC-4310SP, occasionally an error message appears informing me there is an error writing to LPT1: the printer is out of paper. However, there is paper in the printer. Sometimes turning the printer off, then sending the print job, and pressing the power button again will fix the problem. However, other times this will not fix the issue and it will repeatedly occur. Reinstalling the printer driver has not fixed the problem. The computer is a Pentium II with 128 MB RAM running Windows 98. This problem seems like there is something wrong with the hardware on your printer, such as the paper sensor or printer interface. Since the printer is a relatively old model it would be inadvisable to have the device repaired, since it would be unlikely anyone could repair such an old printer and it would probably cost more to have the printer repaired than to buy a new one! You could buy a decent Canon, which would be comparable (or possibly even better) than your existing printer for around $100 - $150. It is best to shop around for a new printer, by going to a large computer department store, so you can see all the different models on display. Just make sure when buying a new printer that your computer will support the device. In particular, make sure the printer drivers/software supports Windows 98, and the interface the printer uses is supported by your computer. Most printers come with USB interfaces, so make sure that your computer has a USB connection, otherwise you may need to buy a printer which uses a parallel port interface. Also, most new devices are using USB 2.0 (which is a higher speed interface than the original USB 1.1). Since your computer is quite old, if your machine has USB ports they are likely to be USB 1.1. In this case, if the printer supports USB 2.0 make sure it is backward compatible with USB 1.1 (most devices are, but it is always best to check). |
