Seagate Freeagent Go PDF Print
Monday, 19 May 2008

Recently I bought a Seagate Freeagent Go portable USB drive which has the ability to load portable applications onto the drive. From what I read, it seems that this allows applications to be run from the drive rather than the host computer. I plan to use this overseas for internet banking. Can you advise whether this would be safe? For example, could I use this in an internet cafe or hotel computer without being at risk of spyware, or should I load software like Spybot onto the drive?

Mac antivirus PDF Print
Monday, 24 March 2008

I regularly scan my Windows XP computer using antispyware and anti-adware utilities such as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. However, these programs only run on Windows. I also own a Mac computer, and wanted to know if there is any such software which will scan and detect cookies, spyware, and adware on the Mac platform?

Spyware notification PDF Print
Monday, 25 February 2008

In the Windows XP notification area (also known as the system tray, next to the Windows clock) a balloon message appears looking like a system alert. The message claims that I have spyware installed on the computer, and instructs me to click the balloon to remove the spyware. This opens an Internet Explorer window which is trying to sell me spyware removal products. Obviously this is some sort of unsolicited advertising. In an attempt to remove this adware I have run Norton Antivirus 2006 together with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy. This detected and removed the adware (VirusProtectPro 3.6) but the icon is still visible in the notification area. Subsequent rescans do not detect the adware, so presumably the core components have been removed from the computer, although the icon remains. How can I remove the icon from the system all together?
